FED1g case - card insert

I have just received a 1g of 1955 (s/n 630xxx) with case which has at the inside back a pocket containing a piece of 2mm thick card 83mmx48mm (see attached photo). Does anyone kow what it is for? The only things that come to mind are a place for the owner to put his name and address, or to make notes such as the film type/speed loaded. thx, Mike

I have several of these cases, and several of these cards. All the cards have writing on them, but they are really too smudged up to read.

thanks for the hints. I found that this did get discussed here back in 2005. I confirm that my card is too thick to be a help in loading. Must be just for notes.

Some of them had exposure guides printed on them. Most of the ones I have seen were blank, although it is possible the printing had been erased through use.

I have a couple of these too, they're for writing exposure notes or whatever. You're not supposed to go poking cards into a bottom-load camera to cheat on using the proper leader! This has been discussed to death here and in the LTM forums on several occasions; some swear by the business-card method, others swear it can cause damage.

My view is that the correct leader makes loading easy and takes only a few seconds to cut (I pre-cut several at a time). It avoids having to take the lens off, fiddle with holding the shutter open and poking around in the camera throat, which I just won't do as it can do no good.

I used to be a believer in the business-card method, but trimming the leader, either at the time or pre-prepared, is much, much faster and less fiddly. (dropped lens anyone ?)

I've not got a copy of the FED manual but do have one for the Zorki 1. It says:

"A small off-white plate is enclosed in the pocket of the camera case, and can be used for notations marked with a soft (H or HB) pencil.

Notations can be easily erased."

The manual is a sort of hybrid and I seem to remember it was someone's translation being sold on ebay a few years ago. It's a mixture of poorly copied pictures and good quality text. It cost US $4 plus postage etc. I can only trace that much from the receipt and, of course, the seller's name on ebay which was "Grandseller".

You could always make a folding template for cutting a proper leader that fits into the space where the card goes.
