Hello
I have a Fed2 and the image is down into the sprocket holes on bottom of image.
I thought I had read a fix for this but cannot find it.
If someone can explain how to correct the film position I would appreciate it and if possible show me a photo of the fix as I better understand visually
Thanks Don

I use an o-ring from a motorbike chain which fits nicely on the plastic spool of the film.

Hi,

I keep trotting this one out but here we go; old cassettes were bigger than Kodak's cassettes and we went from loading the old cassettes that fitted properly to using Kodak's and all the others. So they slop about but a washer or two cures it.

Some say a washer each end and some say a bigger one just one end.

Here are a few side by side:-

Here's an old and new one with the film aligning them by running from one spool to the other.

Is tis 'fix' meant for all Fed 2's? I've put a film through my D4/1965 without any washer (that I know of, though I suppose one could've been stuck in the body by a previous owner) without any problems.

Hello
Thanks all who posted.
David,
Is there a particular model I should look for in one of those cartridges? I know that there are several for the Leica.
Thanks again
Don

Here are photos of mine and both my Fed2's are the same

In practice I use an anonymous* FSU one, mainly because it didn't rattle when I put it in the FED2 and shook it. I'm sorry I can't say more than that but I'll add that a cardboard washer is the usual solution and some use corn plasters! The "o" ring solution looks pretty good too.

* Anon because I can't decipher the Cyrillic marking on it.

In my experience you can't use any of the Leica or Zeiss cassettes, as they don't have the latch on the outer case that engages a pin inside the Fed film chamber. You can see the latch arrangement on the right hand genuine Fed cassette in this shot.

I don't have a Fed, but I've noticed on my Zorki that the little corner of the felt strip where the film comes out of the cartridge likes to get hung up on some of the light-proofing baffle at the top of the film chamber. Maybe trimming a little of the felt will help.... As I'm sure the O-ring or washer would as well (yes, the issue exists with the Zorki as well).

Doing a rough count of cameras and cassettes I reckon there's about 850 or more combinations to try but how I measure inside is beyond me so I'll stick to the shake test, fttb.

The FED cassettes seem to be for the Kiev and Contax but again I've several versions and so to be exact is difficult.

Some good came out of it all; looking at a FED 4 waiting for repair or the wpb I realised I could use a part to repair the FED 2.

The double cylinder cassettes for the FED-2 and Zorki cameras are different and not interchangeable. This seller does not realise this.

Hello again
So are those for a Fed or Zorki?

I ordered a couple of the Leitz FILCA cassettes for my Leica's hoping they would work in the Fed but doesn't look like they will according to a post here.

Thanks again for all the comments
Don

The chrome bit that engages the Leica base plate catch on a FILCA causes problems when I try to use it in my Fed-2. The Fed design is closer to a Zeiss Contax cassette, but not fully compatible with that either, as they use different latches. Nuisance!

Hi,

There was a universal reloadable cassette made years ago; called the Shirley Wellard. I had a look for mine but couldn't find it, so beware as my memory may be shaky...

Anyway, look here for Roger's opinion:-

They often turn up on ebay for silly (high and low) prices.

EDIT:- Just did a search on ebay and found this collection:-
