Ferrania P33, first roll, and some observations.

Steve, the sky in this one looks darker than in your others. Did you use a filter?

My impression from your previous shots is that blue-sensitivity is typical of most B&W films, so filters would have the usual effects.(?)

Just judging by my computer screen, this film has a really nice look to it.

Hi Murray, I did not use a filter for any of these photos, but I did burn in the sky a bit in PS.

First test roll of P33 exposed with Rollei 35S ... Found my 35S light meter was not working right, exposed with hand held meter ... Then screwed up the development by assembling my Lab Box 35mm reel incorrectly. Doh!

Second test roll of P33 exposed with Minox 35GT-E. Camera worked flawlessly. Messed up when I rewound the film back into the cassette and could not, for love or money, retrieve the leader ... sigh. Saved the situation by loading the Rondix 35 tank in a dark bag; just finished processing and hung to dry. Looks like 34 usable exposures, could have shot another five or six (the Minox 35GT-E is so small and the load path so short I often forget that it's not uncommon to get 41-42 usable exposures out of it; I just stopped at about 35 on the frame counter and lost the first half of a frame).

The roll will be dry by the time I get back from my lunch and walk, scan it then and see what I have...
The SLR670a still has two exposures to go on its pack, so I'm deciding whether to carry that or load up another roll of P33 in something. Seems to me I'll need to order another half dozen rolls soon at this rate of usage.. Or do something completely different and load the Fuji GS645S or Hassy 500CM with a roll of Washi 120... 🙂 🙂

... I just had a chance to look through the P33 negatives ... Perfect!! Beautiful tonalities, lovely acutance ... Can't wait to scan the roll tomorrow and pick out a couple of photographs! 🙂

For those doing their own development, I set the camera to ISO 160. The development was in the Rondix 35... I mixed HC-110 at 1:49 from the concentrate, got all the temperatures on all chemistry and water to 68-70°F, and processed for 8 minutes. (The Rondix is a continuous agitation processing tank.)

Scanning tomorrow...

I processed the second roll of P33 about July 1 and it's taken until now to get to rendering the first photo from that test roll ... Sheesh! Sorry for the delay.

I find the film pretty impressive, particularly since is from a test roll with no real understanding yet of how to expose and process P33. I guessed... I guess, from the results, the film has a good deal of tolerance and latitude. 🙂 Lovely dynamic range, high acutance, very editable ...

Two more rolls to play with. I should probably order another half a dozen rolls.

I'm pleased with the contrast P33 is producing. I have a bunch of Slavich grade 2 paper to use and this film looks like it will print up fine. Think I'll try a few rolls.

Tangent: I developed my second roll of Ferrania Orto and the negatives look wonderful, haven't had a chance to print anything though. Will show some in the future.

I loaded up the Leica M4-2 with another roll of P33 and fitted my standard lens for that camera (Pentax 43mm Special), and went shooting for two days. I processed it today ... Based on what I saw with my second roll, I made the same 1:49 mix of HC-110 and ran the processing out an extra minute to 9 minutes. The film just became dry enough so I stepped through it with a magnifying glass ... PERFECT! There are a lot of excellent negatives. I'll scan it and see whether any of them are actually good photographs ...

This film performs very nicely indeed!
