Ferrania Solaris Color Print Film

Was in Roses here in Lexington N.C. a few weeks ago and they have Ferrania Solaris in 35mm & one time use cameras. I bought several rolls of York labeled film a few months ago, $1.00 a roll, both 200 & 400 and it's made in Italy so I assume it's also Ferrania.

Ferrania is labelled as Finast in this area, distributed through the Tops Supermarkets chain, maybe elsewhere as well.

Yes, it is a bit more grainy and contrasty than the majors, but I found it OK for some situations, and didn't really mind the grain. If I were to shoot in really low contrast situations, it might be a good choice.

I was shopping at Baker's this weekend (Baker's is the, LOL, "rebranded" Kroger of this geographical area) and noticed that they had 4-packs of house-brand 200 on sale for US$4.84 with the loyalty card. I figured for that price (US$1.21 per roll) I would give it another try. Usually this film is priced higher than Fuji is at Target'.

Baker's also had 4-packs of Fuji 200 for $6.99 (it's usually $6.40-ish at Target') and 4-packs of Big Yellow for $8.49! Baker's is very seldom low in price for film, although they do stock a good selection.

So anyway, I'll give it another shot, and if I like it I'll continue using it if I can get it at this price.

But wait! There's more! I'm attaching a photo of the box. I noticed there's some kind of a vintage camera and lens pictured on the box. I don't know what it is. Can anybody identify it? (It's probably something many of the people here know well, I'm a total idiot when it comes to the older cameras.)

Wow, I haven't heard of Finast for years! I remember it well from when I was young, but I thought it was defunct.

I got some Ferrania Solaris 135 x 36 exp 200 ISO when I bought out a wedding photography house's supply of film. I've used it for about 3 months. Not bad, it's not Fuji or Kodak and the colours are a little pop-py but it's grown on me. I still like Superia and Gold for that effect. Now I'm using some NPH, it's good too.

I have no taste when it comes to film. Load it up and shoot.

I do agree with the comment from Bigeejit that it works well in a Yashica GSN

I shot some slightly out of date Solaris 200 (ferrania) this past Christmas after getting what I hoped would be a deal at my local super deep discount gorcery store. Can't remember the date.

Personally I didn't care for the results though they were nowhere near the color that DMR got. Mine showed stronger tendencies toward reds/purples. I even tried pushing a roll - don't bother - that got me grain, limited range of colors, and lots of contrast in a bad way.

I would have sworn that Finast was either out of business or was bought out by {mumble} a while back. I haven't heard that name for years. I remember that Finast, Bohack, and Waldbaum were all big competitors and all going strong and I think I've heard that all of them were either bought out or out of business now. (Sorry for the digression, haven't really kept up.)

That shot of the Rio was one of the better ones from the Kroger/Ferrania. What's kind of bizarre about that shot is that it's looking into a clear blue sky, but the sky shows as grey/white almost like overcast. You can see the blue sky with some fluffy clouds in the reflection on the building. I'm wondering if the white sky might be UV scatter overexposing, or maybe the sun illuminating the smog, or ...
