I'm thinking of doing a book for my friends and family for the holidays and I had a few questions about the RFF book process and the options that lulu provides. I think they would be the most cost effective but again the way the book looks is important. I was wondering who here at the site would be able to answer the questions I would have about the design and the process and such??

Gene W did the layout and submission of the book to lulu. He would be the best resource for questions along these lines. Why don't you post your questions here and we will do our best to answer them.

is the book hard or soft cover???
I wanted to submitt a pdf of my layout done in indesign and did the photos need to be in RGB or CMYK???
if you guys did a pdf did you just upload it or send it on disk (112 pages could be pretty big)

I think that's it for now.. I think they have the setup instructions for bleeds margins and gutters etc on their site...

also what DPI was the Images scanned at..

thank you...

the last I saw on Lulu, they still aren't offering hardcovers.. that was less than 2 months ago

their site is very confusing as far as setups and bleeds.. so I'm wondering about that, too.. same for CMYK vs RGB

and would I be correct in assuming that 300 dpi is standard image resolution?

David, do you have a copy of the RFF book? the images are very good, but you can tell it's printed on a lasercopier type setup.. I believe Lulu uses Xerox Docucolor equipment

Yup, Gene is going to have to help us here.

We did submit our book as a PDF to lulu. Gene uploaded it, it was not sent on disc. The cover images were scanned at 600 dpi and the inside photos at 300 dpi.

Soft cover and photos in RGB.

As Rover said, direct upload. The file was about 97MB. It doesn't take too long to send via broadband.

300dpi and 600dpi for the cover. The interior of the book was submitted as PDF. For cover art they suggested PNG, which is what we sent.

Any other questions, just ask!

Gene
