FID! (aka Film Is Dead)

You know, they may have picked up the K-M film production facility cheap so there was little need for new investment capital?

Perhaps that is the "other shoe" as to why Fuji recently announced they were consolidating film manufacturing back in Japan?

Whatever - a 64 chrome is great news - it makes me think of sunny days again!

Doesnt it seem odd that they would budget money for not only a new film product, but a tungsten film product. seeing that film is shrinking and tungsten is shrinking even faster?

From time to time I have the possibiltiy to shoot at fashion shows, they are under strong artificial light.

And I have some nice results in daylight with tungsten balanced film and a KR12 filter. I have the feeling the colours are more vivid than with daylight balanced film without a filter.

Thats very interesting you can use tungsten film in daylight with a KR12. Thats actually very good news because my local photo store always has a big bin of short dated kodachrome 64T for like $1.50 a roll. I will have to definatly try this out.

My father shot mostly EPY 64T in his studio, jewlery and shoes don't sweat 🙂, and some EPT 160T . So after each cataloge there was some left for me to shoot in the old Rolleiflex.

Ah, the good old times when papa payed.

Just remember, in the same breath they (Fuji) also announced an update to the F10/F11 digital point and shoots called the F30, which can support up to 3200 ASA, very low noise, and very small shutter lag.

🙂

Hey Socke,

Speaking of sunny - I thought you were going to be down in Cuba right now "toasting those tootsie with some rum"! 😀

We're headed to Tucson tomorrow AM. We need some sun! 😎

No, not yet. I planned for Salvador de Bahia in Brazil either this or next years carnival. At the moment I've got to work and help a friend with her thesis. She's studying tourism and writes about the streetfootballworld which will be held in Berlin during the football, soccer for those in the colonies, world championships.
Then we'll visit her sister who studies in Madrid and may be two weeks in Cuba in autumn.
So brazil is postponed to 2007.

She gets to "study" tourism! WOW 😀

I didn't think you could turn that into a JOB!

I figure streetfootie is like street hockey etc. Sounds like an excellent opportunity for you to take some great pics while she's "covering" the story on the writing side.

As to the WC - my employer - a major bank in Munich - has procured a ton of tickets for the semi-finals down there to use for marketing purposes. Seems as it's going to be grand fun in Germany this year.

I admit I skipped this thread this afternoon, thinking it was just yet another round of ...

I'm pleasantly surprised, however, to hear of Fuji not only keeping the existing lines, but introdicing new ones!

I don't know if I'll even try the new films, but I'm glad to see them as options. I don't think I've ever shot any tungsten film in my life, actually.

It seems like only yesterday that ASA/ISO 64 for color was a higher speed. That was what I remember the old Ektachrome was. Kodacolor-X was 80, and you could almost do indoor with it. 🙂 Then "high speed" Ektachrome, 160, IIRC, came along and the next thing you knew there was 200, 400, even 800, and now 1600 color films.

Ya know, the combination of 70's vintage glass and 21st. century film is hard to beat! 🙂

It really is too bad that E-6 processing costs so much (for 120, its like $4 a roll plus $5 for processing) , otherwise i would do it so much more. I often wonder if getting a part time job at a photo processing store would be worth it just so i could develop my film for free.

"Turn me on, dead man!"

Fact: Color slide film occupies perhaps the tiniest niche in terms of general film consumtion. Nonetheless, Fuji decided to update some of their emulsions in this realm, just after updating some of their pro color neg numbers. They're not doing this just for you-know-whats and giggles.

The dead, it appears, certainly can dance.

maybe in fuji's eyes, if they can hold the biggest part of that small niche they can make some big $$$

PS to previous post. Being (almost!) serious for a minute, this is excellent news all around. I must admit, I've grown more than tired of the "film is dead and I told you so" posts which seemed to me to be totally against the spirit and intentions of the forum. Yes, we all know digital photography is going to be the way forward for the vast majority of photographers in the future but rather than pontificating about it all, let's just get out and enjoy photography in our favourite way and let that decide how long film survives. Clearly, Fuji are clearly prepared to help with the film side (at least in the short term but they're just kidding themselves and are going to go bankrupt and you're all a load of luddite losers... Just helping out with the inevitable reply there).

Me, too.

Hey RJ,

Where've you been? Hope you ain't been out shooting with Deadeye Dick! 😀

I think that the Japanese, at least some of them, are pretty serious about keeping film alive. If, in two years, Fujifilm is the only film manufacturer left standing, I doubt anyone would really mourn the others. As long as *someone* keeps giving me film to shoot I'm not really going to complain. I'm just going to switch to the different brand. I don't see Ilford stopping production of black and white film or chemicals any time soon either, regardless of the trouble they've had recently. I think that people are seeing that film is very important to a lot of people and not everyone is jumping on the fashionable digital bandwagon. I mean, let's face it. I'm a paid member of APUG now, finally, and I really don't plan on switching to digital until I absolutely positively have to do so. Why? I don't like to do my developing and printing on a computer. The chemical process is interesting and keeps me coming back with more and more rolls. Just watch...I'll be one of those creating my own emulsions before I buy digital. 😛

Hey George,

I took a break to scan some negatives.
Hunting with Dick Cheney? Sounds like a good idea for a reality show.
