I read an old thread on Photonet where someone used the front section of the FIKUS as a hood on the Summitar. He mentioned it removed easily. I looked over my hood, which is the last version. The top section has 2 tiny screws 180 deg apart, that apparently must be removed. Then the circular ring would drop out (?) and the top would slide apart.. yes?? Sounds like a PITA, and I'm not sure I want to mess up a nice hood, that I like with my Summar and 90 Elmar.
Anyone try this? Helpful suggestions welcomed.

I've done it. It works. Now I use the Series 6/A42 ring from a 'square' Canon Serenar 50/1.9 hood with a generic Series 6 hood and filters. Works better and when I want the FIKUS for an Elmar or Hektor, it's in one piece.

Just my opinion but I wouldn't run the risk of damaging or losing the attaching screws by taking the FIKUS apart. The nickle-plated FIKUS hoods bring an alarming amount on ebay while the chrome ones are only just expensive.... at least to me.

Agreed. After reading the first note, I dug out a Canon A42 clamp-on adapter, and am going to use it with one of the Canon square hoods. I don't think it will vignette, and the hood is vented. It does intrude in the VF, but I can live with that. Almost everything intrudes in the very tight environment of the Barnacks, but they are special. I've just put a Canon 50/1.9 collapsible on my IIIa, and it looks great. If the weather cooperates, I'll try it out this weekend... with the hood. The Serenar and the Summitar are very similar in size, and appearance.
