film availability in Norway

Like many of you I expect, you are fuming mad about the recent restrictions on hand luggage on flights from the UK. I'm off to Norway next week and not sure what to do about film. I have a bag load of 35mm Provia 100F which I could send in the post. On the other hand I could buy film in Norway (Oslo airport for example). I prefer slide film but can just about live with Fuji reala if I have to use print film. Can anyone tell which brands and types of 35mm film are commonly found in Norway. I doubt I will get anywhere near any specialist photographic shops as I will not be in any major towns.

Well, if it's anything like here in Denmark, almost ALL of the "the masses" are shooting digital, so even the photo stores have a limited selection (except a few large pro-oriented one in Copenhagen). PLUS film is very expensive here, and will probably be even worse in Norway.

Why not just wrap up your film in a lead bag and stick it in your checked-in luggage?

Using a lead bag is inviting trouble (hand search and special x-ray search of film), see the current thread "Films and flight hold luggage" on this forum.

I'm not sure about Norway, but here in Sweden you would most probably only
find a good selection of films in pro-oriented stores (the bigger and cheaper ones are mail/internet order). I think shipping your bag of film might be the best option, though make sure to check that parcels aren't X-rayed by the carrier.

I also know of a general store chain that carries some films and also exists in Norway: Clas Ohlson (they sell all kinds of stuff, but do have some different films at decent prices too.)

Just ask a Norwegian RFF member to purchase the film and send it to your hotel? I would happily do that if you came to my country.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm looking in to sending the film by courier as it looks like I'll have difficulty finding slide film. I will be mostly in remote mountain areas apart from Oslo airport.

Pab, film here is expensive and selection is limited: my firends usually bring it from the UK or Germany. I doubt you will be able to locate good variety slide film outside of bigger towns; though the forementioned Clas Ohlson here in Bergen currently have Sensia 200 in stock. Similar film can be found at some of FotoKnudsen booths, but not universally it seems.

Your best bet is to bring your film with you somehow.

If the courier idea should fall down, perhaps you could order film from some Norwegian online store and arrange to have it delivered to your hotel (perhaps in advance). I don't know any Norwegian store, but the two Swedish ones I've bought film and darkroom stuff from ship to Norway (though the shipping might be expensive): http://www.scandinavianphoto.se and http://www.photax.se .

Within Sweden: yes, though I would call them and double-check.
To Norway, scandinavianphoto lists 1-4 days. The best bet would be to phone them and ask (they should know English). Then you'll know for sure whether they have right film in stock too.

Thanks to everybody for the advice on film in Norway. In the end, the restrictions were relaxed just before my flight and I managed to carry film from the UK. As a matter of interest, I did find both Fuji Sensia and Kodak Elitechrome slide films for sale in one of the lodges I was staying in.
