I seem to be seeing more and more film cameras in the classified section lately and prices*are coming down for the most common models. With so many film cameras for sale are we experiencing the end of an era, especially with many young people raised on digital. I embrace technology however there is a degree of sadness as I was raised on film.
Any thoughts ?

I've noticed a lot of very desirable stuff on eBay lately from dealers in Japan.
Many who never switched to digital may now be "aging out" of photography altogether.

I feel like this observation turns up on a regular basis here at RFF, and it never seems to amount to much. It's summer for most of us and we're busy doing things outside, planning trips, and probably on average not as focused on buying gear.

Elsewhere I have not noticed any decreasing price trends for the type of gear I look for (mostly film SLR) on ebay, and KEH seems to be getting noticeably more expensive these days.

Either film cameras are going to become more popular, or less. I have an idea what the correct answer is to which one will happen in the long run, right?

It does go in cycles. But the popular ones so far seem to recover their previous prices, plus or minus a bit.

Deja Vu. It seems every forum for every hobby I have (all antiques) has this question asked, about every 3-4 months. Yes, fads and hobbies change. And what people thought would always go up in value (items made in the millions), will actually go down, as Baby Boomers age and move on.

Which cameras are you talking about? SLRs? I purchaised EOS 3 beast well under $200 from Japan last year and sold it after couple of months. SLRs are getting cheaper and cheaper, yes.

Was checking today on Rollei 35 S on e-bay and in Japan and nothing cheap.

And this M3 here for $550 is so attractive! Wait for me, guys!

There absolutely is a cycle to this:
When I have "extra" money, there isn't anything that really appeals and when I don't have money for toys, there are all kinds of interesting cameras/lenses/etc around.
🙁

I seem to be seeing more and more posts exactly like this on the RFF lately...

I remember the year 2011 saw the most recent peak of prices. Little ice age since then I'd say. And we are not "experiencing the end of an era". The sun is long set, we're in the afterlife now.

Yup, film is dead. :bang:

You know people are buying those cameras, too, right?!?

Invariably, more and more from the film generation (from film's golden age perhaps of the '50s and '60s) are passing on and families who inherit those classics don't shoot outside of cell phones or P&S.

Have you checked out a camera fair lately? The average age is getting up there. (Though there remains a small influx of fresh blood from the lomo crowd.)

That said, I personally missed the boat when the market was flooded about 10 years ago when the mass exodus to digital happened.

That's my feeling too, but then, I buy and sell almost nothing nowadays.

Cheers,

I have been on a bit of a buying spree, seeking a new balance point in my equipment. But now I have most everything I wanted, and bit of excess. So I'll be on a selling spree shortly to lose the excess...

Yes, it goes in cycles.

I only shoot film and have been buying more film cameras due to the drop in price. I appreciate them and will keep using them. I look at it as adopting another abandoned dog.
