Film is getting expensive

well bulk is a good idea. I intended to do so and even bought the loader but then I heard that the cassettes time to time opening if you are not carefully closing them etc. So that possibility prevented me to go into the bulk business.

I checked the prices at the german site. If I buy 20 rolls of APX, the price comes down to 4.6 USD.

Well you should also consider that it is also the value of USD in our countries made the prices more expensive in the local currency.

Hey Timmyjoe, what speed are you shooting your double x at and what is your preferred developer for that speed? I'm just bought 10 rolls of it to see if I like it enough to buy in bulk.

Thanks,

Jon

Jon, do a search on this site for the thread about shooting Kodak Double-X (5222) in a Leica M. It goes into great detail about all the different developers and how they work at different film speeds.

Personally I shoot it at either ISO 320 or ISO 1600, and process it in D-76 or HC-110, and in an emergency, I'll use Rodinal (but the grain gets intrusive).

I wouldn't rule out bulk loading.
Check to see what the price of 100' roll of HP5 is.
Here a 100' roll is $58.
Cassettes are easy to get, I use Kodak snap-cap 135 and they are very nice, as well metal generic ones.

If you plan on shooting a lot of film it really brings the cost down.

Is Foma any cheaper where you live? Here in Oz I can get Fomapan for AUD$6 compared to more than double that for Tri-X and HP5. I use Fomapan 200 but there is also 100 and 400 in both 35mm and 120 (same price).

excuse my ignorance but where do you buy double x pre-rolled

check ebay, apug, or the film photography project. It's about $6 for a 36 exp roll, not cheap. But better to try and see if you like it before buying bulk I think

Depending on where you buy, I pay between 4 and 6€ a roll of HP5.
And yes, film has become more expensive in the last years, but it's still not too bad here in Germany. The problem is rather how to get one. In smaller towns (let alone villages) you can only find some colour neg rolls, hardly any slides, no b&w, no 120.

So, we either have to go to the next city or buy online.

I feel sure that the $5.59/36 exp roll price I see on Freestylephoto.biz is as cheap or cheaper, adjusted for inflation, compared to the price I paid in my youth-1970s. The other side of the coin is that the cameras are so cheap now!

Still have a few rolls of Legacy Pro from a big batch I ordered from Freestyle when they closed it out. I will have to order soon and will buy from B&H in a quantity that will get me free shipping. They seem to be the most reasonable in the US and have a good rep.

This is the last place I would purchase film from.
Because I'm bad, ignorant person.
Those gals and guys have film prices inflated due to their task to support themselves and many other film enthusiasts in USA.

That is complete rubbish. The prices for film there are very good. I buy Tri-X and Ektar 100 from them all the time...plus various 110 film sizes. If that is the last place you'd buy film from, it would only be because you like paying more for film.

I find it strange that Tri-X and HP5+ are about the same price in rolls, but Tri-X costs twice as much as HP5+ in bulk rolls. Bulk loading Tri-X is actually more expensive than pre-rolled!

Well there price for a 24 exposure roll of Double-X (5222) is a buck or more higher than the cost of rolling your own 36 exposure roll, but I guess if you don't want the hassle of rolling your own, you could go that route.

That isn't quite true, because in Germany the drugstore chains dm and Rossmann offer film and development (C41, E6, BW).
They are even in smaller towns. And they offer CN film, slide film (CT Precisa) and BW film (APX New).

The availebility and prices of film are excellent compared to other countries. Because Germany has a relative high film per person consumption.

Cheers, Jan

That is normal for every merchant for every film. One would not expect prerolled film to be cheaper than buying in bulk.

About rubbish and paying more, here is what I wrote:
"For under two American dollars per roll, as it cost for me, I wouldn't call it expensive".
I'm buying bw film from BH. Like Kentmere and Ilford.

But your place is equal on pricing for what you have mentioned:

http://filmphotographyproject.com/store/35mm-bw-kodak-tri-x-400-1-roll
4.99
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/29170-USA/Kodak_8667073_TX_135_36_Tri_X_Pan.html
4.95

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/585497-USA/Kodak_6031330_35mm_Ektar_100_Color.html
6.95

https://filmphotographyproject.com/store/35mm-color-kodak-ektar-100-1-roll
6.95

As long as you don't have to pay for shipment over $99 of the total in purchase (this is how I get film delivered for free and within two days from BH) and not buying non existing Svema film from your place:)

I dont think it is the case anymore.
Remember when you can go to dm or rossman and buy a pack of 3 or 4 rolls for 75 cents. Nowaday only kodak gold, ultramax, vista, apx and precisa. Nothing more. And everything go to CEWE. Film sales is dropping, for sure.
