Film is really dead...

... if I don't get free samples at Photokina. And something tells me I won't. Nothing new. Last 'kina - new and improved Portra. Samples. 'kina before that - new Ektar. Samples. This year no new film - no new samples. No free samples? Film is dead!
But seriously, curious what non-digital funny stuff there will be. Besides lomographie freakies I guess the regulars like Alpa will be there, maybe Rolleiflex again with the lastest TLRs behind the glass, an odd MF or LF back and lens manufacturers in between, maybe the boring old Practica will have a stand making me go "WTF?!" every time. Few chinese stands hawking their Seaguls right off displays. Fuji will have GFs far away from the main stand with no attendant knowing what the hell they are. It's all good fun.

(Still - no free film, weak.)

Yes, Sony, Fuji, Hasselblad was supposed to hold a conference about a rumored "Xpan digital" but now the announce this, Nikon with something, many interesting and useful accessories for sure, and a slew of announcements that are still to come.

I forgot to add Voigtlander to the potential analogues list, but either I didn't find them or the last time they were not there. And Zeiss ZM, which is not interesting coz I have one.

Uh what? Macodirect.de / Freestylephoto.biz, only my wallet is the limit. There is no lens or camera that I need to buy ever again (unless the ones I have (3 cameras) break down and can't be repaired and no others to find) all I need to do is buy film and paper, and there is plenty of it for now.

They were there, but not with their own stand. Their cameras were (as far as I recall) on the Ringfoto stand.

If I were to fantasize about a new film it would a fine grain, high colour C41 film, or E6, but there is no chance of that. An ISO 25 Ektar with finer grain and more colour would be great. Not going to happen, I realise that...

Would not be that surprised to see something from Voigtlander though.

Let's keep saying- film will last . Similarly to vinyls which are still being produced. Stay positive people . On the other hand I can't wait to see first 1000$ full frame high dynamic range, with the colour response similar to film , small dslr or rangefinder camera .😀

Yes, exactly what I was thinking, I remember reading about it on Ken Rockwell (don't judge), and it really appeals. Kodak won't do it again, pretty sure of that, but I suppose someone else may so something similar, we can dream.

Maco, Freestyle and a couple of European distributors are there, yes. But I don't believe they sell film? Just give out catalogues. Photokina is a huge overload, so again I might not remember correctly, but also can't find the reason I'd leave the event without fresh stock.
By the way, it's disappointing to see Maco's et al offerings shrink, but such is life I guess.

Surely BW film will never truly die? It's too easy to develop it yourself and you can get high resolution out of it if you care- but lots of people like the coarse high contrast treatment and so on. I expect the range of colour film will shrink and shrink until there's only 400 film left (an uprated 200 if I remember).
No more Kodachromes or even Royal Gold...

Kodak is bringing a film photographer to photokina to showcase and did a big twitter chat about it last night where they gave out free film. Thanks to my constant nagging of them, they do give out free film more often than before.

They are in such horrible shape financially that without the money from selling the film division they are done in less than 8 months. You should expect to see a lot more about film because they HAVE to promote it in order to get a good price for their personal imaging division.
