Low risk if you don't go the ebay route and shop from a sponsor of RFF, reputable RFF members, KEH, Adorama, or B and H.
I've bought a lot of cameras on eBay, only had a couple of duds. I've bought fewer cameras in shops, and had a similar number of duds.
Cameras don't become broken because they somehow detect that they've been listed on eBay. There are scammers out there, sure, but 99.9% of people listing on eBay are basically decent and honest.

Found an unbelievable deal on a M5 (not a scratch on it) came with a 50 Summicron f/2 (made in germany) with Hood, Cap, and perfect condition leather case!!!! Everything seems to be functioning and working… I just ordered a replacement battery for the meter. Can't wait to shoot my first roll!
