Hi

I have just moved to Melbourne, Australia (lovely city) and have been busy taking some photos, which I need developed.

Does anyone know a cheap but good outlet that can do prints from 35mm negative film and develope only from 35mm and 120 slide film?

Also where is the cheapest place to get print, 35mm and 120 slide film, in bulk if need be?

regards

Stephen

Hi Stephen - I can't offer any suggestions, but welcome to Australia (or have you been here a while?).

We have a few members in Melbourne, so they might be able to suggest some good labs.

For 35mm C41 dev-only, my local chemist offers that - I'd think most of the "corner-store"operations would.

Try LabX in St Kilda. I had scans and development work done there last month which was totally satisfactory. I have just moved to Melbourne on a temporary basis and will be quite happy to use them during my stay. They will also courier results. How long are you here?

LabX in Pakington St. in St. Kilda is my recommendation, also. Also, Kris always uses them. Probably the best reputation in Melbourne, I'm thinking. For 35mm, I just go to my local Kodak shop, though...

Cheers,
Steve

Oh, and welcome to RFF, and welcome to Melbourne. Whereabouts are you? I believe there's plans for an RFF get together sometime this month?

Cheers,
Steve

We were hoping to catch Simon from Adelaide, havn't heard from him yet.

Back on topic:
Michaels (Elizabeth St) is OK but expensive.
If you live out east like me then I can tell you about 2 places
- Photo-Barn in KMart complex in Burwood on cnr Blackburn & Burwood Hwy
they are OK, reasonable rates, I havn't been there for a while though.
- Pinewood Digital, Pinewood centre, Blackburn Rd where the freeway crosses
they are quite good, reasonable rates. They have supplies for B&W as well.
these are the guys I use the most.

Other than that there are lots of "Kodak" shops and Fuji "Rabbit" shops which I wouldn't use. I tried them when I first got serious about this stuff and their work was generally horrible. Lots of fingerprints, scratches, chemical marks, dirt on the negatives. I havn't looked at what has happened to the Agfa shops yet, there was one I tried to use in Camberwell a few times.

I always get "develop only" now, and cut & scan the negatives/positives myself.

Thanks,
James

Mmm, cheapest. I think most places would give you a bulk rate, especially if they recognise you are a frequent customer. I get my 120 done at Pinewood (as above), but I know Michaels did a reasonable job of my lens tests last year (bought a 200mm for my SQAi). I only print from digital now, and I think Harvey Norman probably has the cheapest or about the cheapest. Maybe Teds though. HN is a digi only shop though. In that case try Ted's for prices. www.teds.com.au

Thanks,
James
