I recall a while back some discussion on preferences for the light source in film scanners. Was there a consensus on which of these was the scanner of choice, or, since they are no longer in production would it be better to go with one of the Nikons, or even the Epson V700/750?

I really like the smooth, even results from my SDIII, but with no development or backup from KonicaMinolta, it would take a killer deal now to get me into a new or lightly-used one.

I can tell you that Sony has not picked up the Konica-Minolta scanner line. In fact, they aren't even really supporting the existing scanners. I had a 2-year-old Scan Multi Pro that needed repair & after my repeated efforts to get it fixed by the official Sony repair shop for the East Coast (Precision Camera) they basically just paid me off rather than fix it. To Sony's credit, it was a generous pay-off (over 65% of what I originally paid for the scanner), but I would really have preferred getting my scanner fixed (I bought a used Scan Multi Pro from eBay w/my settlement money).

Towards the end of my ordeal, the customer service reps made it clear that Sony had only bought up Konica-Minolta to get access to their digital camera technology.

I wonder is there any chance that Sony will pick up the Minolta scanner line?

I've got the Scan Elite 5400 II. It's a nice scanner. The software is really funky, though (it just decided to stop working for me--never found out why). I ended up switching to Vuescan. If you can get a 5400 II for a good price, I think you might be OK especially using Vuescan. It seems like Vuescan runs my 5400 better than the KM software did.

:)

I have a 5400, which I run trought the Minolta software. I am very happy with it.

Ray, I am trying to use Vuescan under Linux but I can't find a way to use it, any ideas ???

HI Ben. Actually, I kind of liked the KM software. Easy to use and full functioning. It was just so prone to corrupting under the slightest of distrubances. I had to delete this one library file, at least a dozen times in the last ten months to get it to boot--just because of something stupid like a canceled scan. Vuescan is just so much more robust, although a much less user-friendly than the KM software.

IIRC, the Vuescan web site had a link to a Linux version. Is that the one you're using? If so, you may want to start a separate thread asking for Linux help. IIRC, there are several members running Linux systems. I dabbled in Linux several years ago, but nothing since then.

:)
