Film shops in Singapore

Can you please recommend a few good shops in Singapore where I can buy both 120 and 35 films of various speeds (Ilford, Fuji and Kodak), and Jobo 1520 developing tank. Are they more expensive than in USA and UK? Is haggling a norm over there? I'd really appreciate if you can kindly share your experiences.

Ruby Photo sells most film. Kodak, Ilford mainly, but they do have some fuji (Acros/Provia/Velvia).

Find Funan Digital Mall, which is at City Hall (MRT) train station. The shop is tucked away in a corner of Peninsular Hotel Shopping Centre. Telephone number 6338 0236. Opens daily 1030hr - 1900hr. Closed on Sundays.

In the shops, haggling is not common. Unless of course you buy a big amount, you could ask for a discount.

Ruby Photo -They carry kodak and Ilford. But i think you have to ask about the Jobo. Haggling.....naah. Unless you're buying a HUGE amount of film, don't bother.

Sim Lim Square is another large electronics (camera) source. I can't recall if any of the stores there sell camera film, though. However, this place (although a large selection of electronics in one place) has a variable reputation with many; you can haggle more -- but be sure of the quality and price you are paying.

While in City Hall, it's a good place for camera gear (film too). Various film shops like Chiif Cameras (Voigtlander, Zeiss, large digital prints) and Konota (film + developing). This vicinity is the Evil Triangle for all camera gear. Cathay Photo is another source for film, but Ruby is still your best bet followed by Konota.

Your other option is a film developing store at Bencoolen Street near Sim Lim. I just can't recall the name though.

Instead of haggling, make sure you also bring your passport with you and ask for GST refund. T&C will apply though, such as only for transaction above 100 SGD etc.

I think they stock Patterson dev tank. I also think their price is quite good if you comparing it to UK & US prices.

Another recommendation for Ruby Photo.
Excellent shop. Very friendly and knowledgeable people.
They offer Ilford, Kodak, Fuji (negative and reversal films) and AgfaPhoto films (including the excellent CT Precisa reversal film).
Besides Ilford BW paper and BW chemicals.

Furthermore another good source is the Lomography Embassy Store in China Town. This store is run by Meerly Wang.
They have a good range of films including fresh Provia 400X and AgfaPhoto CT Precisa.

And then, last but not least, we have Lo Sheng and his excellent crew from "The Analog Film Lab":

They have recently invested a big amount of money in a complete new E6 dip-and-dunk processor to deliver top-notch quality processing.
It is a lab from enthusiastic photographers for enthusiastic photographers.

I pick up my film from Ruby Photo too. Recommended. I don't think film in Singapore are cheaper than US, but may be comparable with UK. Don't expect a huge selection here, but the staples are available in both 35mm and 120mm format. I don't recall Ruby offer Tax Refund for tourists purchasing above S$100. Sometimes, I do pick up some Kodak or Fuji from Konota at Peninsula Plaza, which is just in the building opposite Ruby.

Of interest to know, the use camera shops are in the same place too. Check out Benphoto and look for Jack. There is also a few other shops across from his with a smaller selection. None of these shops sells film though.

As for Sim Lim Square, there are quite a lot of shops that scam tourists. If you must pick up some photo gear there, perhaps Alan photo (Ground Floor) and Orient Photo (6th Floor). The rest are best avoided.

I contacted Cathey P. They seem to have a very few film atm and they no longer sell Jobo products. So far, Ruby Photo seems to be the best place for films.

Anyone selling Jobo 1520?

Another query: can anyone bring chemical (B&W, E-6 and C41 stuffs ) from Singapore to another country via airline?

BW chemicals is ok, I have to buy a lot of chemical in Ruby because there aren't many choice here in Indonesia. I just tell them that I need to bring it using airplane and they will packed it accordingly. Of course liquid chemicals have to be in the checked luggage and cannot be brought in your carry on luggage.

Cannot be sure about E6 & C41 though since I never bought them.

Another place to check out will be Chiif Cameras.

Actually Ruby is the best place for film in Singapore, coz its really only like one or two places in Singapore who sells B&W and most film.
