Film, which/what to use with vintage lenses?

Try some proven favourites first: Tri-X, Hp5 etc.

Stay away from expired when you're starting up. It will drive you nuts.
I personally settled on T-maxes and whatever Plus-X I can find.

Vintage lenses as a group usually have lower contrast.*
Keeping that "look" is the way to go.
HP+5 a great modern film.
In fact all of Ilford is good.
I no longer use Kodak film, prices too high, the curl problem.
Kentmere has recently been upgraded!
The 400 and 100 are wonderful.
I develop in HC-110 or Blazinol.
Not HP+5, but Tri-X is not the film I used in 70's~90's.
Color I now do digitally.
Lack of easy processing, poor results from so called "Pro" labs.

Anything that fits in them. Just go out, shoot and have fun. Cheap stuff is great (see the $1 film thread) and you'll learn by just doing it.

HP5+ is as capable of handling beginners mis-steps as it is a perfectionists OCD. For a very old school look I like Rollei Ortho 25, but it is very picky with exposure and development.

Hard to go wrong with Ilford HP5+ and Kodak Portra 400. Both are extremely capable and versatile film.

Kentmere films have recently been upgraded? Please elaborate as I'm ignorant.


I like Fomapan 100 with a vintage lens. Ilford's FP4+ is my favorite film. Period. And I love HP5 as well. But for certain 35mm film photos, I really enjoy Fomapan 100.

For color: Ektar 100 exposed at ISO 80.

Combining Fomapan or Rollei Retro films with vintage lenses would be pretty cool.
