Dear fellow RFFers,

I have this yellow filter (Y52) that I hook on my camera for B&W work, usually shooting with HP5+.

I understand that I will need to adjust for filter factor as my camera has no TTL metering function.

After searching on the Internet for a while, I learnt that in general ½ to 1 stop adjustment is required. In order to convince myself that is true, I test my filter out with my light-meter and noticed that in bright light condition (say EV10@ISO100) it requires approx. 2/3 to 1 stop correction but under dimmer condition (say EV6) the difference from the reading of my meter is only 1/3 of a stop or even none.

What filter factor do you guys recommend for Y52 yellow filter?

and, does the filter factor changes under different lighting conditions?

I would use +1

I make no changes.

You don't *have to* adjust the filter factor for light temperature (color), especially if you're just shooting 35mm print film w/wide exposure latitude, but you may want to in order to be more accurate when you're shooting slides (&/or if you ever go up to medium &, especially, large format). As you saw from your meter experiments, meters do *not* respond to colors uniformly (the old selenium meters probably have the most accurate response to daylight), which is why you can't completely trust TTL meters & must often make additional adjustments beyond what your in-camera meter suggests. E.g., if I were shooting a scene that has a lot of blue light w/a yellow, orange, or red filter, which all render blue light dark to an increasing degree, & I wanted more shadow detail, I might open up more than the suggested filter factor.
