I recently bought a nice used canon RF lens - silver/chrome 50mm/f1.8. A salesperson at my local camera store got some calipers out and measured it to be 39mm for lens cap/filter. I mail ordered a 39mm lens cap and it's not the right size - anyone out there who can tell me what size it requires? Serial # is 163137 - I believe it's from mid to late 1950's. Thanks in advance...

40mm is the size. A number of old Canon LTM lenses used that - almost no one else ever did. It's a right royal pain in the patotie as a result.

If you can find one a series adaptor & a series VI (IIRC) is the way to go. A FSU 40.5 (one from a Jupiter 8 or a I-64 for example) lens cap is usually tight enough to work for that purpose.

Put a bit of plumber's tape around the screw thread of your 39mm filter and it will fit your Canon lens.

Cheers,

If you ever want to use filters, there is a seller on eBay.com (US site) that sells 40mm to 40.5mm stepping rings which are much more common filter sizes. I did that for my lens which sounds identical to yours and got a 40.5mm cap. It's worth protecting as it's a super lens.

I suggest u use a 40mm->40.5mm step ring (heavystar has them). Then u can find good quality 40.5mm filters easily.

I might still have a Canon ND4 filter 40mm NIB for you, if interested let me know and I'll start digging it up...
