Canon LTM Filter mystery - Canon 50/1.8

The step-up ring, the 40-40.5 mm, wouldn't thread onto the lens at all.

The glass filter is 40.5 mm, which I bought to (presumably) fit the step-up ring.
 
I purchased both a 40-40.5 and 40.5 vented hood from Heavystar for use on my Canon 50/1.8. I had no problems with the fit. The Canon version I had was the latter black version. I have quite a few adapters from Heavystar and they've all screwed on easily. I also never had a problem contacting him. Swap it for another one. I've learned that China's "quality control" is another euphemism for "good enough for government work."
 
I had a marumi (sp?) 40mm UV on my camera when I went to Europe a couple weeks ago. At one point I looked down and it was gone, screwed itself off I guess. So I'll be looking too.
 
My adapter from heavystar easily fits my 100/3.5(latest made) and my old 50/1.9 collapsible with a slight hesitation.

The adapter doest not screw in to my 50/1.8 (latest made). I wore some paint off the threads trying.
 
You need the series VI push-on adapter and matching hood. I kept mine when I sold my serenar becuase it fits perfectly on my adapted CZ Sonnar...check on ebay...I saw both the adapter and hood on there in two separate auctions.
 
I just got the 40 > 40.5 adapter from Heavystar in the mail today and it screws onto my Canon 50mm f1.8 perfectly. In the pictures of your lens, kidblue, it looks exactly like mine in every way except my serial # is 163137. Maybe you just got a bad adapter? My adapter is black and has printed text on it saying "S&W PHOTO.CO. 40mm - 40.5 mm" in case this is different than what yours says.

Alternatively, you need to go to the monthly camera swap meet in downtown San Francisco, like I did this morning. The filter guy was there with three tables full of filter trays catalogued by size and I got a set of 40mm yellow, yellow-green and red filters for small money. Clean vintage filters by Walz, Zeiss Ikon, Yashica and Mamiya. My 3 Canon LTM lenses are happy. He also carries other odd-ball sizes such as 34mm (Summar), 35.5mm (Ikoflex) and 37mm (your guess). I also learned that 42mm push-on filters (?) are an alternative to 40mm screw-in -- and there is a selection of those too. Another reason to buy sketchy old lenses! Thanks to Roland for the pointer.

In other news, I'm believing that my 40-40.5 adapter was simply a dud. Now that Roland came through, it's a moot point, but I would have likely just got another one or moved to a different step-up-ring and hoped for the best...

Sorry for bringing this thread back to life..can i just check with those who uses a 40-40.5 step up ring, do u need to stop down 1 stop for de pics? Since de step up ring plus filter is kinda long n looks like a hood?

Do u have any issues with vignetting?
 
Let me add 2 cents worth. A few months ago I got lucky and got a lovely 50mm f2.0 Nikkor in LTM from e bay. I ordered a cheap 40.5 hood for it and it fit my Russian Jupiters but would not fit the Nikkor. Finally, close inspection of the filter threads of the Nikkor with a digital caliper found a filter ring bend of only a few thousandths of an inch. I turned a thin piece of aluminum to fit nicely over the outside of the threaded part and used a popsicle stick and a brass hammer to gently bend the ding back out. It now accepts the hood altho a bit snugly. You might have a similar problem that is not readily visible to the eye. Good Luck, Joe.
