Filter size for 21mm superangulon

The f/3.4 Super Angulon takes a 48mm filter not a 39. Series VII will work with the proper 12501 hood.

I stand corrected, while Sartorius says E39 or Series VII, Lager -- a more authoritative source -- says Series VII or E-48...Just to be safe, we're talking about the 21mm for M Series...regards, bob

The lens is 21mm for Leica M. Is there a difference between the E48 and series 7. Is one easier to find. thanks again.

the 21m/f3.4 super-angulon surely must have been an expensive lens and deserves the protection of a real Leica filter...my suggestion would be to return to where you got the lens or, failing that, to look for "the real thing" in any authorized Leica store...the problem with the Series VII filter, as I see it, is that you would still need a retaining ring to hold it in or the hood, as already mentioned...therefore the E48, which is a screw-mount filter, would probably require less effort... you could easily find a generic 48mm filter in the meantime but if the lens were mine I would want the Leica filter... regards, bob

Thanks for your help. I will look for an E48.
It certainly was a real expensive lens, but I love the small size and kind of 60's look the pictues have. It's become the only lens I use in 35mm. I wish they still made it new.

I had the second version 28mm Elmarit M lens which shared the same hood and filter as the 21mm Super Angulon 3.4. The hood is hard to find, and is needed to hold the Series VII filter.

On my 28mm NOT ANY 48mm filter would work. I needed the Leica 48mm filter for this lens. The front element protruded too far for any other 48mm filter to be able to screw in. The Leica 48mm filter has the glass further away from the threads and I was able to screw this on properly. Perhaps this is the same with the 21mm Super Angulon.

Alas, the lens was lent to a friend and the entire setup was left in the back of a taxi cab in Bangkok 8 years ago...

BTW, I believe Leica filters are made by Heliopan, or they used to be anyway. I've always used either B&W or splurged for the Leica UV filter. Both of whose coatings scratched eventually (I don't use lens caps) and I never noticed a difference between the two. Charlie.

Sorry, that Leica 48mm filter that worked with the 2nd version 28mm lens (and perhaps the same is needed for your 21mm Super Angulon) was NOT easy to find. Maybe harder to find than the hood. Charlie

My workhorse is the mamiya 7 plus 50mm lens. And I always carry my contax t3 with me, everywhere. Lately I've been thinking about buying a 4x5.

You can also use a 48mm->52mm adapter (I use the B+W) and Nikon 52mm filters (without the hood of course). Thicker 52mm filters, like older B+W ones will vignette the SA 21mm/3.4 in this combination.

I like the new 21mm/2.8 Biogon ZM much better than the SA 21mm/3.4. The new Biogon allows TTL metering, has better light fall off, better color rendition and a much crisper image, but it is also a much longer and heavier lens (though not big compared to SLR 20mms).
