Filter solutions for 5cm Elmar 3.5?

I would like to get a red filter for my 50/3.5 Elmar, without spending a fortune.

Right now I have a rig for a filter. 40.5mm Soviet 2x yellow; a little masking tape on the interior circumference and it slips right over the Elmar. As a bonus a vented hood screws into the filter. Seems to hold o.k., but haven't taken it on a hike. BESIDES you must take the whole contraption off to change aperture . . . ugh.

Isn't there an easier way?

The above link has a couple of hacks, but if you don't want to go that route than finding cheap ways to use filters is going to be hard. You can find A36 filters on ebay for somewhat reasonable prices. But like you said, you immediately run into the aperture problem. For that you can buy a VALOO, which is an enlarger accessory that doubles as a hood and lets you change the aperture. It is not cheap AT ALL. Or you can buy a VOOLA, which is a little ring that fits under the A36 filter and lets you have a filter clamped on AND change the aperture at the same time. This tiny little piece of metal will set you back about $100 or more. Or you can get a SOOGZ, which adapts 39mm filters to fit an A36 lens. The only thing more ridiculous than the prices on these are the acronyms.

Kenko does 19mm custom order B&W filters here in Japan. They are about ￥2000...
 
Well, it's not an Elmar but for my Rollei 35 it's also hard to find filters of the right size. I use my stack of 52mm filters. I keep the filter in my left hand and when everything is ready with the camera I place the filter in front of the lens with my thumb and index finger. Recompose and click. Works every time.

IMPROVISATION!!!!! But perhaps my hands are not so steady.

Found their web site, but didn't see anything about how to order special sizes.

Do you think the second photograph shown on this page, consisting of a 36mm clamp-on filter holder without the glass and a 39 to 40.5 step-up ring, would make an effective hood? Not sure where one would get this clamp, though.

Who is a do-it-yourselfer? Would buying something like this cheap 37mm hood, gluing in a thin strip of rubber around the inner circumference and then simply slipping the hood over the head of the lens work?

I'll let you in on a little secret: the Elmar (and Soviet clones thereof) use the same 19mm screw-in filters as...wait for it...Argus. Yep, the lowly Argus. I got a nice set of five filters (yellow, red, UV, warming, cooling) plus a screw-in hood (which admittedly makes the aperture impossible to adjust) made by Walz for Argus for next to nothing.
 
Well, one of Spavinaw's Laws says "Stuff is where you find it". Another says "Cheat". With these laws in mind, I offer the following example. I have a set of three Walz push-on filters in a nice blue box. On the lid it has "Mamiya's Filters" and the Mamiya logo. Well, these 36mm filters fit my Ricohflex TLR, my threadless Canon 35mm f3.5 lens and my Canon threaded 50mm f3.5 and f2.8. The filter rims have "Mamiya" engraved on them, but since none of my cameras can read, there's no problem.
 
Hi,

i´ve used in the past some walz filters, those for the argus c33. they come in different colours and not an expensive solution.

They screw in the standard elmar filter housing.

check those.

Thanks, this seemed the perfect solution, but it didn't work out. The red filter listed is not a 19mm but some sort of slip on that will not fit the Elmar, according to the proprietor. None of the 19mm filters he has are coloured. So there doesn't seem to be any good solution without spending some kind of a fortune to acquire the original Leica 19mm filters.

But I did find this on e-bay; can't quite see whether the filters still permit control over aperture or not.

I always thought VALOO was too heavy to be a hood for use 'in the field' and understood it to be primarily for darkroom use etc.

VOOLA seemed like a good idea but you have to unclamp the filter (or hood) to change aperture which rather destroys the point...still got one mind you.

I also just made a hood out of a 34mm cheap metal hood I bought some time ago from Jack the Hat photographic in the UK. I cut off the thread portion with a hacksaw and then filed the lip down so that it pushes on tightly over the perimeter of the Elmar. Completely improvised solution, but it looks good and I think it will be effective.
