Just noticed that an Olympus 35 Rc I have just bid on on ebay has a slight ding in the chrome filter thread, not too bad, how robust is this part of the lens body, any hints at getting the ding out, thanks for any help

You will need the proper tools.
1)a small hammer.
2)a plastic or wooden shaft.
I generally use the handle from a child's toothbrush after the brush has been cut off.

Support the section with the ding on a raised surface with some"give" like a piece of leather.
Using the plastic held on the rim, gently tap from the outer deformed section to the inside. Alternate sides of the dent.

Searched for 'Filter ring dent removal tool', 'Lens tool', and 'Camera tool'. No luck. There is usually some Indian outfit that sells them, and I used to have them in my Sellers List, but after doing some site maintenance, they are no longer there.

Be aware the filter ring on the 35rc is on the same level as the inner plastic ring, it doesn't stick out, could be tricky.

Worse case scenario is the area where the ding is cracks, and you then have to remove a section of the ring. It messes up the aesthetics, but won't hurt the lens performance.

While pounding out the dent, it helps if the anvil (what the lens will be resting on) is shaped with the same diameter as the outside of the filter ring.

I do one of two things when I encounter this problem:
1. I do nothing as I never use filters anyhow.
2. I take the dent out with something none metallic that won't scratch the glass.

Odds are you'll be able to thread a filter in anyways.

Unless you were hoping to use something besides a UV filter, I would just forget it and go naked.
