Filtering darkroom chemicals

Hey,
I've been processing my own B&W film for a few months now. At this stage, my Diafine part B solution is the colour of slightly stale urine, and I'm starting to worry that dust particles are getting into the developer/fixer. Is there any way of filtering these chemicals to remove some of these impurities? I'm not too worried about the colour as long as it still works, but I really don't want any dust inside the tank when I'm developing - I have enough problems with dust as it is! I was thinking maybe pouring the chemicals through a coffee filter?

You can. But on the other hand dust inside the liquids is nothing to be very concerned about - only the dust (and even more so hard particles) in the last wash stage really matters. Most pro lab b&w developers and fixers in large tank times were only considered bad when the bottom sludge became too much to still hang the films above...

Coffee filters are ideal.

Coffee filter are nice for removing chunks. Heck you can see the holes. Look at the grounds in the bottom of the pot.

Cotton wool pads in the bottom of a filter funnel are the best I have found and they are not perfect.

High grade filter paper used to be available when I took chemistry. You might try looking for that .

I cotton wool filter all my wash water and there is a 3 micron filter in the line it comes from. The sediment in developer does not hurt a thing. The silver that precipitates from used fix does and sticks to film. I never reuse fix for critical work.

The late Fred Picker always said, never pour anything back into a bottle. He was correct.

If you're looking for a funnel with a filter this is what I have and use at times...super fine filter...sometimes you have to tap the funnel to get the liquid to move along...
