Hi all, i just became the proud owner of a 35/2, but it came without a front cap or filter.

What size filters should i be looking for (just want a UV for now), and are they quite picky about caps?

Recommendations welcomed 🙂

The filter size for the Canon 35mm F2 is 40mm. Canon Slimline (original RF filters) are your best bet. I own a UV and G1. Recently I picked up a couple of 40mm Walz German filters (Y1 and Blue), for the Canon RF, but I haven't finished fully testing those. All of the generic hoods and filters I tested caused barrel vignetting (to some degree), F22 is the most critical test, when focused at infinity.

Original Canon Slimlines are tough to find, but not impossible to get. They do turn up, I have found in my experience. I dropped out of an Ebay auction recently, for a Y1 40mm Canon Slimline, at $58! Then I got the Walz Y1 for $1.99 and the dealer threw in the Blue one.

The Canon lenscap can be black plastic, or chrome, depending on the vintage. Either will work, I prefer the chrome, myself. 42mm Canon is what you want.

Lens Caps

Lens Caps

Hi All,

After just become the proud owner of a Canon 35mm f2, I believe I have found an easy, inexpensive soultion for the 40mm lens cap quandary!

Presuming you have no other filters on the lens, a 45mm push-on lens cap will fit the lens snugly, sliding over and using the aperture ring for grip! I'm using a generic 45mm cap that came with an old digicam telephoto adaptor, but have no reason to believe other 45mm push-on caps such as those made by Schneider etc. won't fit exactly the same (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/157538-REG/Schneider_91_030350_45mm_Push_On_Lens_Cap.html)

Remember the trick with the above, is that the cap grips the aperture ring. It is this that keeps the cap on.

Hope this helps folks out, who have been pulling their hair out looking for a lenscap for this lens.

Afraid, this won't help those who want to mount filters on the lens, but believe the best solution here is a 40mm-to-40.5mm step-up ring (heavystar on Ebay) and a FSU-style 40.5mm lenscap such as those found on fedka.com. Should you go this route you should find 40.5mm filters much more easily, and inexpensively than 40mm/ original Canon filters. Am not sure of the filter threads, but maybe other folks can chime in here with any experience of such.

There's a Canon 42mm cap on eBay right now, with a reasonable buy-it-now price. While it's the aluminum one, and this lens probably came with the black plastic one, it will work perfectly well.

The Fed lens cap for an Industar 61-L/D lens will work fine.

You won't like the vignetting you will get with this lens, if you buy an Adapter. Stick with the Canon Slimline filters, they made them slim, for a reason. I have a couple of HeavyStar Hoods and Adapters and Filters I can sell you, if you like the vignetting you will get with these hoods and adapters. The Canon 50mm Hood and Kodak Wrattens don't vignette, from my direct experience. The others will vignette without a doubt.

The original Canon chrome front caps usually need the felt liner replaced at this point, or they fall off easily. I recommend the black plastic ones for actual use. But you can use virtually any 42mm cap - I'm partial to the vintage Minolta caps, which stay on very snugly with my Canon lenses, and they're usuall easier to find.
