filters for my Ikonta 524/16

Does anyone know what kind of filters and sizes can I use with this camera? Also does anyone know if there is such a thing as a filter that would slow the camera down a few stops? I have access to some 400 ISO film, but the max shutter speed on this camera is 1/300. It would be great to be able to put a filter on it that would allow me to shoot on something besides f32 on a sunny day.

This is easy: find a Series 6 (or 5) adapter that slips onto or into your lens. Then get a hood that screws into the adapter. The hood will hold the Sreies 6 filter in place. To use fast films in old cameras, get neutral density filters (my favourite filters) to cut down the light by many stops without changing colour relationships.

My 518/16 Nettar (6X6) with 75mm f/4.5 Novar takes a 31.5mm slip-in adapter ring (the same size as the Retina IIa and IIc).

I've got several Zeiss folders in different formats. In 6x6 I have the Nettar 517/16 w. Novar 4.5.

On this and most ZIs, there are two ways to fit filters. One is to find a slip-on filter adapter to fit the outside diameter of the lens. The other is to find the slip in adapter VictorM mentions. This fits in the groove on the front of the lens.

On some lenses, including the Novar on my 517/16, the slip on adapter (around the front of the lens, not the slip in adapter) would easily interfere with the distance index on the lens.

i have not found a simple source for the slip in adapters -- any clues would be appreciated.

For the slip on adapters, one place I have found them consistently is on that auction site -- either specific ones, or often people will have a lot of assorted filters, retaining rings, and adapters for peanuts. No guarantee of the size you need.

You would need a filter adapter of correct size (indicated both by series and by diameter -- ie you want, on my lens a 35mm Series V slip on or a 31.5mm Series V)
a filter, and a retaining ring. Ideally, you would want a shade also. I think VictorM is also right that a Series VI would do.

For the film speed issue. If you shoot color, look for a Series V two stop neutral density
filter (takes 400 speed down to 100). If you shoot B&W, you can also play with yellow and orange filters.

If your top speed is 1/300, then you must have a Novar in a Pronto(r) shutter. I know that the Tessar takes a 35.5mm filter, and the Novar should as well, but it depends on the lens barrel. The lens threads to the outside of the barrel.

If the lens markings are on the chrome of the flat portion of the lens, then I'm not sure. If the lens markings are on the black enamel of the face ring, then it will take a 35.5mm filter.

35.5mm filters come up on eBay now and then. Or you can buy new B+W filters through B&H. They're expensive because they're almost always special order.

What you want is a ND filter -- neutral density -- to reduce the amount of light.

Here's what I would do: I would first buy a 35.5mm UV filter on eBay. If that fits, then you can proceed with other filters.

I fell into the 31.5 trap, bought a push in 31.5 adapter this morning and it just barely does not fit. Now we know why -- it should be 32.

It also turns out that apparently the 75mm Novar 4.5 is different on the Nettar than on the Ikonta; I see no provision for screw-in filters on my Novar.

My apologies for my contribution to the confusion and thanks to those who straigthened it out.

The series adapters are intended to be adjustable, plus-or-minus almost a mm. Use a pair of non-marring needle-nose pliers and gently tweak the prongs out until it fits.

Thanks, Gumby, I thoughts so, but after playing with it for 30 minutes or so, gently bending the slip-in portion out, I gave up. It looked like bending it out a bit never got both ends of any diameter to fit at the same time, did generate a little angle in groove (ie slight lack of paralellism), and felt like I was risking pushing against the lens standard too hard. maybe I need a small version of those filter thread re-rounders that spread the diameter with two rounded pieces. Or maybe I just need a nice shot of grappa for mellow courage.

There are 3 set screws holding the lensring to the lensbarrel. If one or more of these screws is sticking its head out of the inner ring you maybe not able to slip on the filter/hood.

Just tried to fit a 32mm filter on my Mess-Ikonta and didn't manage because there is just not enough room between the inner and outer
ring when the filter lip is too thick. btw I tried with a Voigtländer filter.

For fitting to a folder I generally need two shots. I prefer bourbon. It took me several attempts at fitting an adapter to my folder... and I'm still not sure I'm quite finished.

Agreed, the "normal" filter adapter lip is too thick for the slot. There are adapters with thinner lips, and that's what I got -- still no go. Perhaps not thin enough.

Well, this morning i had another look into our filter problem.

Luckily enough i had an old Cenei 32mm slip-on filter with thin lips.
I measured the thickness of the lip. It is 0,7mm.
Many other filters/hoods i own have a tad thicker lip i.e. 0,8mm.

STILL THE CENEI DIDN'T FIT :-( :-(

A closer study revealed that this was 100% caused by the heads of the
3 set screws of the lens ring with both my 524/16 Tessar 3,5 and Novar 3,5.

How do i know ? Simple, the Cenei filter had lost 1 of its 3 clamp-areas in
its lip due to fatigue and just in this place i could push the filter completly
between the lens rings at the height of a set-screw.

So, a simple, practical solution would be to make 3 slits in the filter lip at the
places where the set-screws are. You could do this with a file or a Dremel tool.
Make sure to use filters/hoods with thin lips (0,7mm) and don't forget
the deburring (to avoid scratches).

Thanks for all the responses and introducing me to the neutral density filters (exactly what i was looking for). I took a picture of the camera for you all to look at to help narrow down the correct filter size.

To answer a few of the questions about my particular make - it is a 524/16 with a 1:3.5f / 75mm Novar-Anastigmat lens and a Prontor-SV shutter. Max aperture is f32 and max shutter speed is 1/300th. The lens barrel does not appear to have any threads inside or out. I measured where I think the filter would go (from the circular slot between the outside of the lens barrel and the start of the lens) the distance appears to be about 32mm to 33mm (the gap is 1mm).

So, I bought a 32mm slip on adapter Series V (from filterfind.net, thanks for the link, they are great. I bought it yesterday, and it was here today). It doesn't seem to fit properly (judging from earlier posts about taking shots while trying to fit filters, I expected as much). I am posting a couple of pictures to show the adapter and the fit.

When I first tried to fit it, it wasn't even close. I took out a pair of pliers and gently bent the tabs to get the fit in the picture.

Two issues: Is this a proper fit? It seems as though quite a bit of light will leak through the gaps. And, with a proper fit. Can I expect that the camera will be able to close with a filter on it?

I have bought a 32mm slip in/over lens hood from Kodak. It works fine.

Adapter? I'm not sure what you mean, it adapts what to what?

It will probably be a series holder. By now, few people know that series filters need a holder and retaining ring.
