Just wondering if anyone uses filters made by a company sold 'SRB'?

I decided to ask here as they sell 40.5mm filters in sky 1b, red, yellow, orange, green, polariser, ND and so on.

Their coloured filters are resin and made on the premises to order.

I don't know if any of their filters are coated or not.

On the one hand, I'm not keen on resin filters and wanted to get multi-coated glass ones, on the other hand when I had a bronica etrsi I was getting a cokin 'kit' togther and they're mostly resin.

So are filters made by SRB any good?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Back when I still bothered, both LEE and Cokin sold resin filters made by Formatt-Hitech (who back then had pretty much a monopoly for stained CR-39 - much like there only were two or three makers of quality stained optical glass world wide). I suppose that the market has opened a bit, but the actual vendors still will be trimming, coating, framing, packaging, branding and distributing, rather than being involved in the actual fabrication of optical (synthetic) glass. It is up to you to ask yourself what amount of quality they might add (or remove) compared to other makers.

@sevo. Thanks for the reply.

I understand your point, unfortunately I haven't yet got any information that I can use to make that decision.

I presume that you're referring to the UK company called SRB Griturn? (If not, then you can ignore the following :)) :-

I have two ND filters by SRB Griturn, and I have found them to be very good. There is a **slight** magenta colour cast (often the case with ND filters) but it's easily removed using white balance adjustment - provided, of course, that you're shooting digital (and Raw). The build-quality of the filters is good. I haven't tried any of the other filters on your list, so I can't comment on those.

SRB also do a wide range of filter rings - step-up, step-down etc. - and these are also of good quality. I have bought several items from them in recent years, and always been pleased with the quality. (Disclaimer: No connection with SRB - just a satisfied customer).

Hope this helps.

@tbhv55, Dunno about the 'Griturn' bit, but on their website's homepage it says they're in Dunstable.

Thanks for the heads up about the ND filters. Though by the time I'm ready for nd filters I'll prolly have forgotten what you wrote. I'm on 35mm. Or I wll be when I've got a few more bits. I won't be using ND filters yet as I would generally be using those for landscapes and I've not got a tripod. That will take a while as I want a camera with multi-exposure capability for various ideas for landscapes.

Yes, that's them.

They were created, IIRC, some years ago, from an optical company (SRB) and an engineering company (Griturn) to create SRB Griturn. Perhaps they've now dropped the Griturn bit, for simplicity. :)

They make a lot of their own stuff, and will even make bespoke items, if wanted. As I already said, their stuff is good quality, and they despatch orders quickly.

Well, at least there's someone here who can speak up and give them a good rep.

It's still looking like I'll have to flip a coin in order to decide to buy any of their threaded resin filters, though.

I have been using them for 30+ years and have always found them helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. You can go out to the units they have and I like that.

@andybrown, hello and welcome to the forum.

I've emailed them a couple of times and they do seem quite helpful. I do think though, that if their website was more helpful, I wouldn't have had to email them.

For example, in the descriptions for their circular filters, they don't mention what they are made of or whether they are multicoated. I only found out that their skyligt 1b filters are made of multicoated glass after emailing them, I also found out that their coloured filters for mono are uncoated resin by emailing them.
