finally got started - first results

The squeegee thing is a can of worms -- like mac v. pc.

Good news is that with patience, you can rescue that file easily enough. One of my favorite shots of my wife came back from the lab (before I did my own dev) with hundreds of scratches. It took dozens of hours, but it's fixed -- it prints (inkjet, of course) gorgeous.

no more squeegee fingers!!!!
and yes, it's through the whole roll.

aaaaaaargh!!!!!!!!!

Yup, that's what one speckle of dust can do if it's a 'hard' one... 🙁

I spent some time striping the water off with my fingers, but it leaves drops of water on the film and as a result I have calcium deposits as these drops dry out... Did use the Photo-flo in the final soak but there's simply too much calcium in the water...

Last batch of film I did, I just held the film hanging down from one end and shook it around. Then hung it away to dry: no calcium stains to be seen anymore!

Hope this helps.

Nice shots, I guess this thread will help other people take the 'plunge'!

It's really more of a dip in a puddle, one just has to keep to it... Right?🙂

I have a jug of distilled water I use for the last rinse before the photo-flo. Which is mix up with distilled water. It went a long way with drying marks. Now dust is another story. That's seems to be a never ending battle in my house!

Rollei Retro 400S @ 400 in Diafine, 4+4, 2 gentle inversions per minute and a rap for bubbles after each inversion set. Hmmm...
Looks like the aliens are attacking!!
is this bubbles in the tank?
overdeveloping?
chems too hot?

Less than half the roll have weirds, although i'm finding contrast harsh and grain ugly.
Back to Tri-X methinks.

Tri-x @3200
Rodinal 1:50, 32 mins at 68F
5 sec swirl each 5 minutes

Now I have what I was after... high microcontrast, black blacks, nice tones.
No sharpening in PP (beyond what Flickr does)
a few shots were underexposed and turned out horribly, but the ones that worked made me happy.

More experiments with Rodinal and Diafine to come.

How about pre-soaking the Retro 400S for two-three minutes in plain water before souping it in a short-time developer like the Diafine?

Squegee: The best one is your wet fingers.. wet!

Thanks, I'll try pre-wetting the Rollei for my next roll.

I've stopped with the finger drying so no more scrapes - but still get water stains even though i use flo-thingy in the last bath and shake hard before hanging. Maybe it's the tri-x curl holding onto the last drops.

I'm intrigued by the posts on 3 stop pushing Kentmere, might try that when my tri-x and rollei runs out.

Learning lots, and occasionally delighting myself by the results.

I have had some success pouring the wetting agent down over the film post removal from the spiral after it has been used in the last bath. Eliminated about 98% of the water marks I had been suffering.

Alex, FWIW, I run my water through a Britta filter and use filtered water for developer, stop, and final rinse with photoflo. I do use a squeege. I keep it clean and wet it in the final rinse/photoflo water before use. Run water in the shower to kill the dust, then hang the film in the now-humid shower area.

I think all this helps a lot with deposits from drying.

I liked the tones in the cash register image.
