Finger Lakes

I made it back to Chicago last week, and simply wanted to let everyone who posted on this thread know that I had an awesome time in the Finger Lakes! I wish that I had more time to spend there. Beautiful vistas, really cool small ( tiny ) towns, lots of outdoor-type things to do, and a just plain beautiful area of the country. And the wine...

Thanks again for all the great information and suggestions, people.

PS. I also got to take a few photographs while there... Will post a few after I finish the last few rolls from my last trip.

The gorge at Watkins Glen State Park. VERY cool.

The airplane museums are very nice (Curtis, Wings of Eagles, which is at the Elmira-Corning airport, the National Soaring Museum). Plenty of parks (Letchworth is nice, and I was there last week, Stony Brook... I love driving up SR 36 at about 90 mph in something even slightly sporty). I like Montour Falls as a nice place to stop.

If you get bored with NY, head south out of Corning on US 15, head West at Mansfield on US 6 and go to Wellsboro for the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. Another nice place, and far, far less crowded than Letchworth. The town is also pretty nice, as well. Too bad you're coming in at the end of tiger lily season.

I personally like the Reisling at Lakewood Vineyards on 14 just outside of Watkins Glen. Bully Hill, on the west side of Keuka Lake north of Hammondsport, is known for their good food and wacky labels (according to a family member who used to be on my congressman's staff, the artist was NOT stoned, just a nut). They are NOT, I repeat, NOT renown for the quality of their wine. It's $5-7 a bottle at the liquor store and is pretty much reserved for sentimental locals and college kids who want a serving of fruit in their diet :).

I don't think anyone mentioned the Glen for one reason: It's pretty self-explanatory to go to Watkins Glen and not have to be told about the park, hehe.
