Sorry to hear you have problems with your very own M8.

How anti-climactic this must be for some.![]()
Well at least it seems to be giving some people pleasure.
Never mind, I was happy with the M8 before and I'm still happy with it now.

I like the new face recognition AF feature!

The best camera is one that still works!
Menu driven lens coding would have been nice!
Oh well ... it all still works and that's what matters!

this update is phenomenal. when i started the update, i had a 50 cron on my M8. now, with the update completed, it's a 50 lux.
(i'm only partly joking as the latter lense arrived in the mail today.)

I'm running to my mail box now!
FWIW - The new firmware did not F anything up so I consider this a success.

Only in Leica land can not f***ing something up be counted as a success!

Haha! Ain't that the truth!
As a side note, I've been thinking about picking up one of those Om-1 cameras you seem to like so much. Will this GAS never end?

OM 'gas' is is pretty low impact financially ... provided you can stop at one of course!

That what my LCD displayed after reading this thread. I'm approaching this like the internets suggests: Wait and read/wade thru all the complaints in the comments of (insert techblog here) and wait for v.2...

Considering it's supposed to be the last firmware update ever for the M8...
so now online community should continue from where Leica stopped!! my Mac though is pretty lost of what firmware binary is about:
Code:
> file m8-2_005.upd
m8-2_005.upd: doom patch PWAD data containing 8 lumps

Considering it's supposed to be the last firmware update ever for the M8 I'm a bit disappointed.
I was hoping there would be a little more to it, such as manual lens setting like the M9.
So do I.
The manual lens setting would be of help.

Sure... but I wouldn't touch it (at least my m8 wouldn't). Firmware is one of those things that many engineers would say 80% test 20% development time for good reason. A bug could result repair and we all know how much Leica repairs can cost. Who would be willing be the guinea pig? Its not like software which can placed in a test bed and debugged relatively easily.
file command only examines the magic number. I wouldn't expect it to know anything about a file containing bits to firmware of some arbitrary piece of hardware.
I'm happy with the M8 as is although the extra features would have been nice (but I understand the effort involved so I didn't have expectations). In the software industry, often you'd have to pay for even updates for bug fixes.

The m8 is now capable of high ISO performance far exceeding that of the D3
