the thumb thing helps (along with the grip) to maintain a firm hold but it also keeps the thumb away from hitting the back of the camera. .....

Joe: I will try one of those thumb things but it is necessary for me to have a firm grip with my thumb on the back of the camera at all times since my only contact with the camera for 6-7 hours at a time is my fingers wrapped around the grip and my thumb on the back. I don't use straps but simply always carry the camera like that in my extended arm so I am always ready to raise it to my eye and shoot.

And where my thumb naturally rests is right on top of that damnable Q button.

Well, I was hoping for manual exposure in movie mode on the X-E2, but you can't have everything. The other new features look good.

i think you will be surprised at what the thumb thing does for your connection to the back of the camera.

Fuji is a great company. I have to laugh (so I don't choke) when people say a 2 year old design is getting old. I don't play the "I need the newest and bestest every 4 months or I cry" game. I still shoot 50 to 150 year old cameras monthly. I could care less if the "focus peaking needs to be purple" or "the menu should include a blah...blah" on my X-E1. It's a camera, not a computer, thank God.

Well, actually it is both... 😛 I love my X-Pro1 but I have stopped using it after using the Sony A7r (though I cannot sell it). Sure, the Sony lacks sexiness, but it works better for my photography. Unfortunately, we are in the golden era of mirrorless so 2 years old can result in a camera that is vastly outdated in many key functions and once you use a different model that is faster, etc, it is hard to go back. Of course it depends on how you photograph and what you expect from your camera. What you deem as nonsense may be a feature someone else finds essential. There is nothing wrong with using what you have as well. Differing philosophies are a plenty on RFF.

I can't imagine a software feature being "essential" that wasn't even heard of for 150 years of photography. Hype and consumerism.

This! I found myself overjoyed with the original Ricoh GRD when I first bought one, despite that Ricoh was at the time preparing to rollout the APS-C GR. I think there's a lot to be said about 'aging' digital cameras and their appeal to those who can't afford the newest. I'm blown away by the amount of really neat gear I can pick up for a song simply because it's been superseded by something slightly (arguably) more advanced.

I am biased, however. I'm picking up a used XE1 as soon as I find a good price 😛

Add my vote for this combo too. The Fuji grip and TU radically altered -- for the better -- the ergonomics.

it is much easier to hold a strapless camera with a TU type grip + camera grip.. and more secure IMO

There are a couple of different shapes to the Thumbs up devices. I like the new one made just for the x100s but you may like the older one (probably less $ too) which was "longer" and somewhat interferes with the Q button...
