Firmware updates

Fuji said peaking was also dependent on the Phase Detect sensor (which I don't buy) so I guess they are drawing a line in the sand and we will have to upgrade to new hardware in the future to get peaking and split focus.

By anon.. hrmm, didn't dig deep, but if that's what they said.. ow.

I read it too, linked to some review like dpreview, a trusted source. They explain the physics of both peaking and split image. What a company! Updates every month or so, and for things like faster, more accurate AF. Great.

Every time I read "Improved performance of Auto Focus under various shooting conditions." I want to scream like an excited school girl at a Justin Bieber concert :D

Cheers,
Dave

Peaking isn't hardware limited though... Sony have added peaking via firmware updates on cameras that don't have PD sensors, as have the Magic Lantern team with Canon DSLRs. Good news about the better AF though!

Peaking might not depend on phase detection, but it could depend on an upgraded processor. It seems plausible that peaking is computationally expensive and Fuji may have implemented some of the functionality in hardware on the new EXR-II chip. That said, I really hope they are able to bring it to the older cameras via a firmware update.

That maybe more likely answer since Ricoh gxr and Sony cameras (Nex, rx1, ad rx100) have focus peaking on cameras. Some of those cameras do not have the new combined phase and contrast detect sensor.

There may not be enough horsepower left for doing both peaking and xtrans decode for the LCD or evf.

Others have said they can already see an edge effect shimmering when everything is in focus w/ existing sensor. I cannot normally c it since my eyesight has gotten worse as I have gotten older. Could be that was the best they could ever do w/ the older technology.

But it would be nice if they could figure out a way to have it w/ older cameras.

Is the firmware update not live yet? I keep seeing everywhere stating that it is out today (18th) but it's not on fuji's website or anywhere else I can find.

I think I saw on Fuji rumors site that it was delayed to to discovering a "glitch" as they put it. There was no update in terms of new target date. Must have been something they discovered late, could be someone forgot to tell them something during beta trial on te upgrade.

I've been trying the link on the FujiRumors web site — showing version 2.03 — but it only takes me to the old 2.01 update. I haven't heard about any delays but maybe someone else has more info?

I have heard, and this is just via voice (I have yet to see any rumor sites claim this), that Fuji held back on the update to do further tweaks.

Cheers,
Dave
