i started with the smaller of the 2 cases i bought at the 'photo fair' this past week end.

i added foam only to the top part pf the case, made some slits and put my filters into the slits.
the bottom holds my meters, extra hoods, series filters in leather case etc.

still struggling as to how to fit 3 cameras and 7 lenses in the other larger case.

actually, the folks at the foam shop recommended that.
but i haven't had one for years.

i used a utility knife and an old bread knife, serrated edge.
the foam shop said to spray 'pam' on the blade or wipe the blade with a 'bounce' sheet and it would glide through the foam.
and it worked. (i used the fabric sheet bounce)

Hard cases are a very good solution for home storage or transportation of the whole system in the car trunk ie.

Just two things, be sure to put some silica bags in them, and as Brian mentioned in another thread recently, be sure that foam is not liberating any gas (pun intended) that could haze the lenses or end in buying another P 😀

silica might be a good idea although it's very dry here especially in the winter.

no idea. i bought hi density foam that is normally used in hi end foam mattresses.

they cut to size and both pieces cost me about 13 bucks.

Mattresses are made with really nasty stuff. I have been in a couple manufacturing facilities. One who made foam mattresses burned to the ground, an 1800s vintage mill, weeks after I was there. The fire department was helpless unable to do anything other than to prevent the fire from spreading due to the chemicals in the building.

I have had some problems using foam in cases. It outgasses, causing haze. It also deteriotes, and stained the chrome on a Konica FS that I stored in one. It is not a good long-term storage solution. I have one old Nikon case that uses Velvet over cutouts instead of foam. How about balsa-wood or heavy cardboard with velvet pockets for your babies?

Try to find gator foam. Furniture or mattress foam is bad for your cameras. When they deteriorate, they'll stick to everything, and they deteriorate fast. One tip for cutting foam is to freeze the foam first. You'll get a very clean cut.

How about checking B&H or Radio Shack, small electronics supplier for the appropiate foam?

You can buy high density polyurethane foam in white or gray. Pelican cases and others come with gray high density foam which they claim is safe for your equipment. The supplier should be able to provide you with all the specs regarding environmental issues. Maybe you guys are thinking about styrofoam or some of the older types of foam rubber.
