First FSU results

After I took delivery this week of a Leningrad 8 meter (in mint condition, and accuracy spot on), I was finally ready to shoot some film with my new FSU gear (after so many years of TTL metering, I'm lost without a meter). So I loaded the Fed 1 and Fed 2 with some colour print films that were lying around, left the I-26 on the Fed 2 and put the J-12 on the Fed 1 and spent a few hours walking round town followed by visit to Jessops for a 1-hour soup special. (Interestingly, I found myself checking the light every 4 or 5 shots with the meter, and I didn't have to change the exposure all morning 🙂 ).

People here have suggested I post some results (I suspect what you've actually been thinking is "stop yapping and post some results" 🙂 ), so here are a few. These are just simple full frame scans, without any digital tarting up. There are one or two here that I think might turn into something reasonable if I spend a bit of time on them, so I might do that a bit later and post the results.

But what did I think of thr FSU gear? I'm really pleased with the results (there are one or two minor problems, but I'll ask what you think about those when I've examined them more closely and thought a bit more).

Wow, those colours are brilliant. I prefer the second set of photo's, the last of which looks like it could have been cut out of a prospectus or brochure. Very nice, and yes, spot on exposure 🙂


of the first lot, the little notes on the wall look bleached out, maybe you should have metered for this area rather than the rest of the image?

And I couldn't resist a bit of tweaking, so here's a couple that I think have benefitted from some work (it was pretty obvious what the one of the brick wall and stairs needed)...

The second set are Kodacolour while the first set are a high street own brand (can't even remember which one), so the better colours are probably due to that (I was really just testing if the cameras worked properly, and that's all the colour neg film I had - I rarely use it). But having said that, I really am quite impressed by the colour saturation and contrast that I got with the J-12. I need to try both lenses with Velvia, I reckon (but that will have to wait - I'm just off to fill both bodies with FP4 😀 )

Yes, good point, you're absolutely right. Ideally I should probably have metered both the notices and the door, and bracketed a few shots.
