First gripe about the M2

...and hopefully the last non $$$ related M2 gripe...

The tripod mounting point is on the extreme right hand side of the camera. So when one adjusts the tripod head, the camera tends to 'swing' rather than 'tilt'.
Or is my old school LF ways showing up?

However, so far so good. She's a fantastic little monster...

Perhaps the first Leica ever to be mounted on a tripod?

They really drilled that hole in the base plate so that they could dream up accessories to sell us. It is just a coincidence that it is the same size as a tripod socket. :)

Hey come on rover, I use a tripod all the time! ;) But talking about accessories, Joe Codispoti at Clearsight has a nice $50 solution to the problem that provides a central tripod mounting socket and is also fits an Arca/Swiss type QR clamp. These adapters are extremely well made, the top one is the one you need:

Leica to Arca Adapters

Stu, the Leica grip ($50 used) not only makes the camera more "ergonomical" to handhold, but also provides a CENTERED tripod screw.
Just thought you might want to know. Also, I recommend those grips wholehartedly!

The tripod mount is not in the center........ you got a bad one! Send it to me and I'll see to it that it is disposed of properly :)!

Todd

P.S. I'll pay the shipping .

Another vote for the grip. As rover said, I think all these design quirks are meant to make us go buy accesories. :)

Leica accessories, mind you...

Add in another vote for the grip. It really DOES make that much difference to the camera's handling (as well as putting the accessory socket in the centre)

OMG!!!!

YOU MEAN THAT YOU ARE MISTAKENLY USING THE EVER-READY CASE FASTENER AS IF IT WERE A TRIPOD MOUNT!!!! YOU MEAN IT ACTUALLY SUPPORTS THE WEIGHT WITHOUT FALLING OVER!!!

nnnNNNNNOOOOOoooo....!!!!

The Tripod mount is on the 13.5cm F4.5 Hektor. Use it instead.

Todd- Does $1000 shipping sound right to you? :p

Brian- I've got wierd looking Hasselblad spacer/adapter that fits in nicely.

In short my non $$$ related M2 gripe has turned into a $$$ related gripe.
I didn't think I needed a grip has camera fits well in my hands. So where does one find these magicial $50 grips with the center tripod socket?

I have ball heads on my tripods so this is not an issue for me.
I do too Frank which is why I need an Arca/Swiss type adapter. I have an A/S QR clamp on the ballhead. :)

I have the RRS Arca Swiss plate for my M6 TTL for mounting on an Acratech ball head. The plate is very nicely made, works well and doesn't much compromise the hand held ergonomics of the M6 either. Aslo around $50 or so.

Stu: another nod for the arca-swiss adapters on ballhead. Either the Kirk photo plate or the RRS plate work well. Both are well made, machined to be lightweight. good luck

Yea the great thing with the Arca/Swiss system is that it has become a standard and so there is competition from several manufacturers. And after fitting the A/S clamp (I have a Markins) to the ballhead I would never use anything else. So fast and convenient! :)

Scott do you like your Acratech?

I don't like the position of the tripod socket on the M cameras, but it does have a theoretical advantage when a monopod or tripod is used without a cable release or self-timer. Since the socket is not far from being in-line with the shutter button shaft, almost no rotational torque is transmitted to the camera when the shutter button is depressed. However, because it feels unstable, I use a grip which has the tripod socket centered underneath the lens axis.

I like my Acratech ball head just swell, but I'm not much of a critic. It's smaller and lighter than a B1, the other ball head I was considering. It was also nearly half the price. Stability seems fine with no discernable creep using the light cameras I'm using right now - M6, FM3a and D70. The panning feature is also definitely useful.

I have the thing mounted on a pretty heavy tripod I bought for its price, stability and height - a Manfroto 475 (I think), the most recent version of the 3036 (if I got that right). I'm using the tripod indoors for people pics. I imagine the Acratech head would really come into its own mounted on a lighter CF tripod where something like the nice small RRS B25 wouldn't quite hold the necessary weight (bigger MF/LF camera or longer SLR lenses), but where a B1 would surpasss the weight quota.

another solution for a centered tripod mount is tom's rapidwinder, though scarce and out of production for the m2.
