I have finally forced myself to install the software for the new Epson scanner with medium format tray. I completed the scan of one slide so far. Nothing special, but it is my first MF slide scanned. This will allow me to scan some of my better slides (6x6 and 6x9) in the coming weeks. These will be images you have not seen before from me, and they will not include any photos of children.

I am exited about the possibility now to shoot again with 6x6 and 6x9 format.

Thanks, Max. I hand-held a Rolleiflex 2.8D wide open at 2.8 with slow slide film (Agfa RS50). Some of the photos were not totally sharp because the cold wind made my eyes tear up. Here is a second photo.

Trius: Here is my third RS50 slide scanned. I am still trying the basics of MF scanning. I took a roll of film of my wife at Pensacola Beach a few years ago (???) during the winter. There are [no] kids in sight, so this was about 4-5 years ago. I love slow film, but it is difficult to get sharp images hand-held. For about 15 years, my standard film was 50 for short-tele lenses and 100 for long tele lenses. I never even thought of trying "fast"film, such as ASA200 film.

For the record, Raid, I always enjoy pictures of your children. They make me smile-and I think your daughter must be a saint to sit for all those great portraits.

Raid,

After shooting and then scanning my first medium format negative earlier this year I was hooked. I have yet to shoot color slides but I am just blown away by the smooth creamy tones in my B&W shots and the incredible detail. You definitely need to start photographing your daughters in medium format.

I will start taking MF photos of my two daughters. I have the MF equipment that is needed. The Tele Rolleiflex with the sharp 135mm Sonnar lens is perfect for pleasant looking portraits. I also have a Mamiya 645 with the
180mm Zeiss Jena Sonnar lens and the modern 150mm Schneider lens.

I may have missed some posts before - is this the V700/750, raid?

I'm torn between buying one of those for 6x6,4x5 or waiting until February-March, to see how the new Microtek works out.

I once asked here in RFF about getting a MF scanner, and someone (Thanks) told me that Epson [online] has a special going on for the model Epson Perfection 3170 Photo. Including shipping, the cost was about $70.

aad: Thanks. Yes, Dana really make it easy to be photographed by me. I took today a roll of film of her.

Keep 'em coming Raid! Very nice portraits.
ciao 🙂
Nico

Thanks, Nico. I will try to free some time up tonight to get a few more MF slides scanned and posted here. It is scary how narrow the depth of field is with a MF lens wide open.

I have scanned two more slides from the same session.

Kenneth: Thanks. It took me years to finally buy a scanner with MF capabilities, and then it took me another couple of months to start using it.

P.S. Here is one more.

These are nice! With MF, you can get away with fast film. So much more real estate. I never use a MF with 100 speed or lower without a tripod.

Nice, nice, nice Raid! I have been using an Epson 2450 for several years now, and love those MF scans.

You might consider scanning some Reala negatives, as the stuff scans beautifully. Once in a while there is some kind of weird coloration (maybe 10% of the time) but the overall Reala scans are POPPING with good solid colors, yet good skin tones.

I've also enjoyed Velvia for landscape scanning (of course), and also have found that 400UC scans beautifully.

There really IS a difference in scanning in relation to the various films out there.

Black and white film scanning was problematic for me at first, but with the utilization of the tweaking capabilities of SilverFast, I've been able to have good output from that venue now.

It's ALL fun!

A great day with great light and a great subject. Curious though, is the reversal of some of the images on purpose (see post #5 vs. post #16)?

I have been able to rediscover color with my Rollei 2.8c since I picked up an Epson 4870. There is nothing like a good scan of a MF negative (except a silver enlarged BW!).

Larry: Not at all. I was trying to figure out which side is top and which bottom for a scan. You picked it up.
