This is my first thread here at the RFF. Been reading here for a few weeks and seems like a nice site.
I live in Manhattan in the west village and just got back from the park on the west river. It is spectacular and a real dream to start my new career in film. I had a great time...because I was watching all the great sky, the view of Jersey, the great Richard Maier glass buildings...the Freaking Statue of Liberty....and wasn't attached to my digital screen looking at every picture I just took. It was my first time getting the film thing.
I have no idea what the pictures will look like. It is amazing that this is one of Manhattan's most amazing views and it is not really known at all. You go out on the big pier on the west highway and christopher street....you go 1000 feet out into the Hudson and about half way out you see the Statue of L. Reminds me of Hong Kong without the mountains. There is everything new and old to take pictures of with sky and water and boats and trees...all the good stuff for real cliche photos....hope mine aren't trite.
So you're wondering what the newbie is shooting with....a Contax TVS II that I bought about 10 years ago. Never used much which is what seems to have happenned to a lot of Contax cameras. However tomorrow will arrive my new RF..thank you all for your help in deciding where to go.....Zeiss Ikon ZM and 28mm matching lens. Black if you please.
The Tvs II is really a great thing...absolutely wonderful in the had....the dial on the zoom has a great feel and when the film advances there is a great whir..which at some point in time made someone say "how high tech that is"...but to me it was a pure organic sound compared to what we are used to in this world. Also with your help I am going for a Contax G1....most of you like the G2 but alot actually prefer the G1....even if it is quirky. As long as I'm not looking at a digital screen I'm sure it will amuse me.
I got started a few months ago by going to Egypt. I had no camera and knew nothng. Ended up with a GF1 with the 20mm lens. Freaked out in London on the way over and bought a zoom there. Ended up using the 20mm for 96% of my shots. I took close to 1000 photos and HAVE to go back with film...it is an amazing place to see and take pictures. I want to learn how to take pictures of very large buildings.
If you are in Manhattan...go to the pier on the park at the westside highway....too many great things to take pictures. Would be a good road trip for a bunch of filmheads.

Cheers,
Robert
