First Nikon scans

Hi everyone,

My Coolscan V finally arrived after waiting a month so I've been having fun scanning the huge pile of negs I amassed while waiting. Here are some of the best ones:

Sorry, I know the Nikon isn't a rangefinder but I couldn't resist!

Glad you like them Nachkebia. I've only just started developing my own negs and I'm really surprised at how easy it is to get started. I'm very pleased with the Ilford combo too. I have some Tri-X as well, any idea if it works well in Ilfosol S?

Just sitting here scanning in some holiday negs on my V.

browse web... click some buttons... browse web... click some buttons, resize crop, click... browse web... ad nauseum.

I'm sure you'll be as happy with the scanner as I am. I've even grown to like its noise, makes it seem like its working hard.

Yeah, it's great how you can do things in the background while it's chugging away. My old flatbed used to make the whole machine freeze for the 4 minutes it took to do the scan! Needless to say, I am really happy with it. I'm completely self sufficient now (well, photographically speaking anyway!) but I have uploaded these shots to be printed 12x8 at dlab7. Anyone done this to good effect?
I've got some pics to dev and scan from the London meet a few weeks ago I'll be putting them up when I get a spare couple of hours.

Thanks so much for including sample scans.
QUSTIONS:
- Is yours the Nikon Coolscan V ED, a 14 Bit machine?
- How are you handling DUST [yuk!] on the negs?
- What are the FILE SIZES in the sample scans you included.
- How well does the scanner perform with color?
Any other USEFUL INFO is welcome...
I plan to purchase the same scanner in the Fall.

Good questions!
Yes, it's the Coolscan V ED, 14Bit max depth.
I get rid of the dust with the photoshop spot healing brush, which is absolutely amazing! I'm not particularly careful with preventing dust getting on to the negs so it takes about 15 mins to go over the entire image. Once this is done they come out looking silky smooth and clean.
The original tiff file sizes are about 40Mb for b&w at 14Bit or 130Mb colour at 14Bit. The ones in this thread have been resized and compressed to jpeg and are about 160Kb each. I recently uploaded these pictures to DLab7.com and had them printed 12x8 and they look brilliant. I'm sure you could have them printed up to 30x20 and they'd still look great assuming the neg is good enough.
I haven't done much colour, only a couple of slides but I was very impressed with the performance, and the digital ICE seems to work wonders, but only works on C41 film.
Overall I've been very impressed with the scanner, but it's my first one so I don't really have any other point of reference. It makes a nice chugging sound while it's scanning, and from what I've heard it's one of the faster ones in the price range. I certainly wouldn't want to wait any longer for scans than I do with this one, not enough patience for that.
Also, it has an auto feed so you don't need to load negs into a carrier. This works really well and I would imagine this saves loads of time and effort. You just slot the neg straight into the scanner and it's ready.

I just got a Nikon V myself. My fiance is using it for her wedding work so we got the SA 30 roll film adapter so she can scan a whole roll of film. Its scanning right now. We just set it up and it does it's thing, saving the fils t a folder we created.

Thanks pesphoto, glad you like them. What sort of size is acceptable? They are a bit on the big size! Maybe 800px on the longer side?
