First impression, without the Milich UV/IR filter, was HOLY MAGNETA CAST !!!! The lens is virtually unusable. I was shooting outside, a beautiful sunny day up here, and magenta everywhere.
So, I put on the UV/IR and much much better.
I didn't think it would be so bad. I think I've shot other lenses without the UV/IR filter before and never got such horrendous results.
Is it because of the short focal length, that drives the need for the UV/IR filtration?
I thought the short focal length drove the need to code the lens.

Vick,
I never actually used my WATE on M8 without the Milich holder & IR filter. No problems using this combination. My issue with it was forgetting after a quick lens change to tell the M8 I was at 16mm. As you know it defaults to 18mm. This then causes inadequate cyan correction in the corners which proves very difficult to eradicate in post processing.

This is interesting. Never had a WATE, but played around with a CV 15 coded as different WATE FL's, eventually finding the best solution was no coding.
Some folks say the different FL's don't do anything except encode the fl in EXIF metadata file. I think Sean Reid showed some subtle differences in coding at different FL's at one time.
Perhaps the firmware changed at some point to either do nothing, or to just do a single correction for all 3 lengths.
