First Photos with the M8

An update from today. I found that underexposing at ISO's 640 and up is verboten. If you do, the vertical line problem crops up on this sensor.

Mudman, underexposure at higher ISO is where we see the vertical line problem the easiest. You should also see it in dark/shadow areas at lower ISO if you pixel-peep closely. This is a problem that you should raise with the seller of your camera.

Not an unusual problem, and some have suggested it will be an on-going one with any digital, caused over time by cosmic ray strikes on the sensor. It may be seen as a line or just one or more hot/dead pixels. Leica will fix this (should be no charge) probably by mapping out the affected pixel(s).

Best to address this issue sooner than later.

In the meantime, you probably have a bunch of pics that will show the line under close examination. A way to eliminate the line that has worked well for me: Output DNG to full-size TIFF. Locate the line. Select everything to the right of the line and hit the left-arrow key to move the selection one pixel to the left. There, line gone! On to the next pic.

The forumite that sold it to me is willing to give me a refund and return my M3 DS as well. I'm waiting to hear back from Leica NJ, I'm calling them tomorrow afternoon as well. The problem I have is that I'm leaving for Paris in 2 weeks - I really don't just want to bring my M6 and have that be my only 35mm camera. So far I'm not seeing a lot of images effected below 640 or 1250 (when exposed properly). I may have to just be careful how I shoot, and then send it in once I get back. If it ends up costing a lot of money to fix (I'm hoping they'll give me an estimate over the phone) I'll have to either send the camera back to the seller or see if he'll work something out for the repair.
