Well... I shot about 4 rolls of film this past weekend using my new Zorki 4K with J-8 lens. Today I took the rolls of film to my 'Intro to Photograpy' class to develop the film. This was my first time shooting real B&W film and using actual chemistry to develop film, etc. Prior to this I had worked exclusively with my Digital SLR and ocassionaly with B&WCN film that can be developed in minilabs.

Anyway, needless to say I was extremely happy about learning to finally develop my own film. All was going well... I ensured I agigated the film properly, and following all development times.

Anyway, once I did the final step of adding photo flo, and dumping the photo flo, I took my reels out and examined the film...

Practically clear film. 🙁

The film I had been using was given to me by a friend who had taken an intro to photo course a few quarters before. She just gave me the a box of Fuji Neopan 400 speed film and some development tanks and said that I could have them all. Ecstatic, I used the film and took tons of shots.

Upon closer inspection of the film containers once I noticed my over-developed (or at least destroyed film), I realized I hadnt been using Neopan at all....

I was using Rolleipan 25. How I managed to not even notice that I was using 25 ISO film or that it was indeed Rolleipan, I have no idea.

I couldnt believe that I had totally mislooked this hard fact. So yeah, my first development went with a disaster. So obviously no photos to show you guys. :\

Luckily I have two more rolls of film... however they were shot with Illford HP5+. Thankfully I know the development times, etc for these.

Some of the shots should turn out quite well I hope.

As soon as they do, I'll scan the negatives, etc and hopefully post some for you guys to see.

Anyway, does anyone else have any interesting or funny 'horror' stories of their first time developing or stupid mistakes they've made (besides leaving lenscaps on, etc.)

Hi, shame about the "error". They say that it builds character. It will at least make you more methodical in the future. My claim to a stake in stupidity came when I began to reuse ID11 for 2nd and 3rd film development, at the same session, mainly for test type films etc. somewhere along the way I mixed up the identical jugs of developer and fixer and did the last film fix first. This film also lacked any image. Now I mark the jugs very clearly.

Oh yes and keeping the temeperature of everything at the same level....abrupt temperature change are very very entertaining! Don't try it unless you are very curious

I put a roll of colour print film through my Mir to test my handiwork in sealing a light leak.
The film came back from the lab totally unexposed,as I had not loaded correctly, and the film had not wound on at all.😱

How I failed to notice this when 'rewinding' I cannot explain. It may be the usual stiffness of an FSU camera, but I think it was something more human than that.😱

Brian.

BTW the light leak wasn't fixed either!!
