Downers Grove had the annual art fair yesterday. We went down to dinner and I walked around with with my M6 and new 50 2.8. Fantastic lens, but these are just low rez scans for fast loading.

They are very nice photos Ronald, but I cannot stop thinking of the fact that IMHO that new Elmar produces pics that are very similar to what I get with an Industar 61 L/D.

Ronald nice pics! 🙂 xayraa33 I have Ronald's lens and an f3.5 Elmar and a FED Industar-22. At the level of resolution you see on a computer screen, they all look pretty similar with the f3.5 Elmar showing the least contrast. But when you print them at a large size the differences are there; the modern Elmar produces much better prints and has an edge-to-edge sharpness that the other lenses just don't have.

It is a chrome one. Super happy with it. Tri X doesn`t show it off well, especially at a low rez scan on a computer screen. Delta 100 is outstanding.

None of these are manipulated in any way. except the girl in the wagon was cropped 50%. No levels, no curves, no contrast or brightness adjustments, no sharpening, no retouching, no anything. Straight from the scanner.

This is why I stress develope moderately and keep the darkroom clean with water and air filters and do not reuse chemicals. I don`t even know it the ICE even works on my scanner.

Oh I am sure the new Elmar is a very deluxe lens and to see a good print in person is the way to go.
But on the computer screen I still think the new Elmar has the look of the I- 61 L/D IMHO.
I hope I did not offend any Leica romanticizers out there.🙂

Nah. I got lenses from all over the place; I'm not a Leica fanatic! The current Elmar used to get a lot of grief in comparison to the current Summicron but it is in fact a very good and underrated lens. I use mine where you need edge-to-edge sharpness, that's where it excels IMHO.

I'll tell you that my little FED I-22 gives this lens a real run for it's money for internet type stuff. I'm going to sell my f3.5 Elmar because to be honest, I think the FED is better for what I use it for. 🙂
