First Pictures from my new Elmar-M

Good idea Tom. I'd like to see a comparison between the new Elmar-M, the first generation Elmar, and the Heliar. One of these may become my second 50mm lens.

Justin, those are great photos. Is that the one that was for sale on p-net? I think you beat me to it, it was a great price.

ditto - very nice pics, justin. and i agree with todd - you nailed them.

i like my new elmar, too - and have thrifted my kit down since it doesn't leave my M4. it's simplified my leica life.

I've just taken some test pics of the Elmar v Summilux Asph. I just bought the Elmar for its portability when travelling and trying to sell the Summilux.
Many RFF posts praise the Elmar. I was really interested to see your pics.

Thirteen,

I'd love to see your test pics of the Elmar vs Summilux.

The first 50 2.8 from 1958/72 is a fine lens too. Tests run on mine show it slightly softer at 2.8 with a wee bit of flare. Common outdoor subjects from 4.0 down are sharper and look like DR/rigid pics.

The new one is like the latest Summicron. Subjects with very fine detail show more with the new, but if all you had was the original, you would be happy.

They are about as different as second and fourth gen Summicrons.

interesting night images and how the 'slow' Elmar goes against prevailing thought that a speedy bigger lens can only do this type of photography. A good modern high speed film and a low-flare well corrected lens does the trick. Makes you wonder if that expensive f1.4 lens as really necessary as we think?

Thanks guys. Glad you enjoyed the photos. 🙂

The nice thing about night photography is that the light is pretty consistent. I guessed the exposures, which is quite easy to do. E.g. at dusk you'd get about 1/30s and f4, and with just street lighting alone, it's 1/15s at f/2.8, darker scenes one stop more.

These shots were handheld. I should get a little tripod, but I procrastinate.

jja, you're correct. This was the lens that was on Pnet a while back.

I'd love to see a comparison between the Asph Lux, the Elmar and the new Heliar. I probably wouldn't be able to afford any right now, but it'd be interesting. 🙂

I did consider the '58 Elmar, as I was looking for a compact lens for travelling. Didn't manage to find one that was suitable, hence this. Incidentally, I'm now selling my rigid 'Cron on eBay and keeping a Jupiter-8 for my 50/2 lens. 😱

A monopod should gain you a stop (maybe more, depending on your technique), and I think it's more versatile than a small tripod.
