So here are my first serious attempts at black and white processing/developing with my epson r-d1.

To do it, I used each channel from the channels pallet in cs3, copied them into the layers pallet and then masked the tones to achieve my desired look. My desired look is probably something of the general photojournalistic style films such as tri-x/HP5 and neopan 400-1600.

It's difficult trying to get decent looking grain on the images, but luckily the r-d1 is naturally slightly filmy/grainy looking at the higher ISOs.

My own critique of the images is that I may have used too much of the green/blue channel on Gens face in the first one - It seems to be a little dark. the second image of my pop home re-loading some sport shooting ammo seems to be lacking in midtones a little bit.
Apart from those, I'm fairly happy with the way it's turned out, just need a little more work to get it really nice.

Please note these are just snaps, I just wanted to get opinions on how the bw conversion went.

Thanks,

Also I just noticed - Note the contrast difference between the vintage canon serenar (1st photo) and the modern multi coated vc ultron 28 (second pic) - can really see it!
I think I much prefer the contrast from the serenar for b&W.

Quite interesting!
