To put some oil on the waves:

in my opinion, any photographer should get enough experience and knowledge to reproduce reality as close as possible. As a matter of fact, that's what he should work on first.

Once experienced enough and having full control over the equipement and processes for reproducing reality, one can dive into the artistic deviations of reality.

Your liking does matter, but it doesn't make sense to create something according to your liking if you can't understand how you did it and why you like it better than reality.

Huh? You mean...?

technical photography is about getting as close to reality as possible, no? You can of course 'like' a picture technically, if you assess it on technical criteria. Same goes for aesthetical criteria and appreciation.

A photographer who is not able to take a picture that scores on the technical criteria, will be even less successfull when it comes to taking pictures for aesthetical purposes.

I would have to disagree; you can be visually skilled and technically weak at the same time and still produce a meaningful image.

Quite true. I've seen very fine examples coming out of cellphone cameras created by people who know nothing about cameras, films, or exposures.

in my opinion composition is main part of photography. everything else is secondary.
if you make nice composition - photo is good and nothing else matters.

btw i really like your first photos. keep on shooting and printing.
good luck
