First roll and advice needed, please!

Just got the first roll of film back from my "new" Canon P with Jupiter 8 lens. My first attempt at using the sunny 16 rule so I'm not sure whether I'm relieved to have captured something or disappointed at the quality! Fuji Superia 200ASA. Quite a few are dull and washed out looking, like the first of my reluctant model (my daughter, bless her). Underexposed? Or something else wrong here? The second attachment is a bit better I think. These were processed by a high street shop and put on cd. They're supposedly high resolution but I don't think they're very good. Any suggestions on how to improve would be much appreciated. Hi Alan,
The second one (stone fence) looks good, just has a bright background with the stones looking good. The first one (your daughter) looks very underexposed to me. The lab compensates and you get an image that lacks contrast. Since there is no direct sunlight on the subject, your exposure should have been several stops more than "Sunny 16". I'm no expert, but it looks just like the underexposed pictures I've taken when trying new cameras.

Alan, I agree with Kevin about the first photo. As the second example shows, I think your J-8 is fine.
As for the scans, how big are the files?

Only about 800kb...small?

The first is as others have noted under, if it's in shade on a sunny day I'd say ƒ4 to ƒ5,6 is about right. The file from a fuji scanner will be about 1mb each as they scan 4x6 at 315 ppi.

First one looks like you shot into the sun, the Jupiter 8 is not keen on that, not sure if its that or under exposed

I dont shoot much colour but was given 5 rolls of superia 200 and was very impressed

Nice! Seems a good general purpose film to me but I wonder how much it is influenced by the choice of processing company?

You'll save yourself a lot of headache and heartache by buying a cheap hand held light meter. Like anything else, they come in a wide range of prices, but at this point you only need something simple. There are even iphone light meter apps. BTW, I've taken some very nice images with Fuji Superia 200. Have fun!

Indeed. I find FotometerPro to be effective. 69p seems very cheap, next to my Sekonic L308.

Of course, you do need the iPhone in the first place...
