I get so wound up with 'add a little contrast' - people say it to me all the time!!

by the time you add contrast it'll be TOO contrasty!

The photo looks great on my monitor 🙂

i agree photo looks good . you can see the "blacks and the whites" . to much contrast you would lose all the nice grey's inbetween .

Yep, all zones are visible. To up the contrast you'd lose the detail in the clothing, the face would go dark, and the window highlights would be blown out.

Same happened with my avatar. I had to sacrifice contrast for 'reality'. The day was hazy and bright, and that little dog doesn't like right with high contrast 😉

Daniel please don't take offence, I hear 'add a little contrast' way too often. Last year there were about 4 posts in a row asking for crit and every one had 'add a little contrast'.

I agree with Daniel on this.

But to each their own, that's why I've never told Ash he needs more contrast in his scans either. 🙂

On the other hand, if you hear the same criticism a lot, there just may be something in it.

Frank, I did eventually sort the contrast issues from my straight scans back then, but I don't like to lose a lot of tones just for stronger blacks or whites 🙂

This is funny really, I printed the pic on fibre paper in my darkroom yesterday
(on a 1950's Leitz Valloy 2, to remain in style) and I found I had to use a somewhat harder filter than I am used to.
So Daniel has a point here...🙂

I agree. Contrast looks great on my recently calibrated Mac monitor..
