first scan!

ok, so i just finished my first scan after finally getting my scanner to work.
i used photoshop to process the scan and then clean it up a bit afterwards.

so far, so good.

but when i go to save the scan, photoshop only offers psd/raw/tiff as options.
no jpeg?
how do i save in jpeg?

your advice greatly appreciated.

Two possibilities:
1. You working on a 16 bit image (very likely).
2. You have layer/layers.

Use Save for web... and it will be converted to 8 bit JPEG image. Or you can do it manually Image > Mode > 8bits/channel then use Save or Save As...

"Save for Web" for converting jpegs is the way to go. It gives you previewing which makes it easier to select the level of compression.

it's all greek to me!

i was working at 16 bit, so, does this mean that if i work at 12 then it will offer jpeg as a saved option?
no layers, don't know what that is or how it works, yet.

i scanned a neg that was done by my lab to compare.
they processed in rgb while i did greyscale.
i like their end result better but mine is closer to what it actually looked like.

Congratulations Joe!

When you're done making adjustments, go to Image->Mode in Photoshop and set it to 8-bit. You'll then have a Save or Save As option that includes JPG. Cardinal rule: don't save over your original scan -- you may need to start over (voice of experience ...)

I'm not a fan of Save for Web. It truncates long filenames and strips exif data (not so important with film but vital for digicams).

your scan looks nice though I do prefer the one from the lab as it has more details in shadows / low lights. But it seems to be sharp, I guess that by editing it with photoshop, you could obtain something similar to the lab.
What scanner are you using ? it looks sharp.

i think i just might like this.

now if i could figure out how to bulk load that 100 feet of tri-x i bought friday...the print is so small and the pics are too dark from the instruction sheet. 😉

i traded gene for his older model canon 2710 scanner.
and that shot was taken with a 100/4 canon triplet lens, not the sharpest.

Hi, Joe -- In your "Wrong Way" scan, the brightest white is pale grey. I think you underexpeosed the scan slightly, losing some shadow detail. You could brighten the whites by tweaking the histogram in the Levels control. Like so...

or are you talking about tweaking the scan after it's been made?

you should be able to control exposure before and after the scan.

Joe, you should be able to control the exposure of the scan. After-processing of the scan can include various adjustments to the Curves and Levels, that will affect contrast too. But in this scan, I mentioned underexposure because it's a bit dark over all, and the darkest tones are clipped; that is, through scanning underexposure some of what should be dark grey is black. That particular picture has a wide range of brightness levels that calls for very careful scanning exposure to capture. Take a look at the histogram, and you'll see the data is shifted leftward, clipping the dark tones but leaving unused light tones at the right. I just moved the white slider leftward from 255 to about 231 to brighten the upper end of the tonal range. Couldn't do anything in Photoshop to help the lost dark tones, that'll take another scan.

BTW was the Nikon L30 already on slow boat or it didn't ship finally ?

PS: Why don't get a CLE again instead of the Hexar AF... ?

Joe, I hope you don't mind but I took YOUR scan and spent about two minutes with it in Corel Photo-Paint 12. I think it's now fairly close to the store scan. I did the following:

Auto equalize
Gamma adjust
Sharpen
Directional Sharpen
Tone Curve adjustment

A little time spent playing with your scanner settings and the PhotoShop adjustments and you'll soon be turning out better scans than the store.

Remember that my monitor and your monitor are not likely to give identical brightness so allow for that when viewing my attemp to alter your scan.

thanks for all the tips guys. i need to figure out what most of it means but i'm on the road.

oscar, i had a cle and really like the camera but i'm thinking hexar cause it's all in one with no decisions as to what lens to use/take with me.
my preferred lens is 35mm and the hexar lens has a cult following.

i have no cash now and need to decide if i sell the bessa or not.
