I got three lenses in today and had a chance to check the reconditioned unit I got last week:

All three lens front focus.

Infinite focus is off in the viewfinder when all three lenses are set at infinite focus.

5 hot pixels, I know these can be mapped out with the camera software but you would think this would have been done when the camera was reconditioned?

Well I guess I call Epson tomorrow and see what can be done.

Regards,

Tim

What do you mean with "Infinite focus is off" - the rangefinder patch is offset, or disappears at infinity? Hot pixels: does the camera have the firmware upgrade to v. 2.0? Otherwise you'll have to download and install it yourself.

I am quite shure that for Epson, "refurbished" just means "reboxed". I bet these "refurbs" are cameras that were taken back because of warranty issues and now are dumped off. Sounds really like a "you get what you pay for" deal.

sounds to me like you get the same thing you paid for with the $1395 refurbished as the $3000 new ones. I think I'll take the latter!.....Peter

Tim, these sound minor - I'm sure the rangefinder can be easily adjusted. And the hot-pixel mapping works well, though I've found it necessare to re-do it once in a while - no idea why???

I must confess to a wry smile when I read the Leica forum and see the new and potential M8 users going through the same sort of angst we did when the R-D1 came out. Like the wife, you end up accepting the odd quirk and loving it anyway :)

ps don't tell my wife I said that!

Hi Tim,
How do the pictures turn out. Does it focus accurately? What do you mean by front focus?

When the RF indicates focus the lenses are acutally focusing about 3" in front of the target @ 1 meter. (I've only tested at 1 meter and at infinite).

"What do you mean with "Infinite focus is off" - the rangefinder patch is offset, or disappears at infinity? Hot pixels: does the camera have the firmware upgrade to v. 2.0? Otherwise you'll have to download and install it yourself".

The finder patch is offset to the right at infinite as if the lens is not driving the roller back far enough.

And yes this is not a big deal to map the hot pixels (I've already installed the firmware update) and calibrate the RF. I'm a mechanical designer with lots of tools and mechanical know-how so calibrating the RF is not a big deal to me, but I don't want to kill the Epson warranty so will give them a call and see what they say.

Note: I think this camera is great and worth a little effort I'm not giving up.

Regards,

Tim

Vertical RF alignment - how do I know its off?

Vertical RF alignment - how do I know its off?

As title...

Is it literally that the top edges of the RF patch don't coincide when the side edges do coincide?

I think front focusing is an issue with the lens not the camera. This happens to my R-D1s too only with some lenses, especially the older SM ones. You may try a modern M lens and compare with an older one. I would just get used to the lens instead of doing any kind of surgery on the camera or get new lenses.
The infinity focus is also an issue with the lens. This happened to me too with an older lens. I tried a newer lens with the same focal length, and it worked fine. I am not sure what the solution to this problem is, but it doesn't seems like a camera issue. But then, I could be wrong.

Good luck.

I think I'm right in saying that all the CV lenses work fine on the R-D1 - at least, all mine have been spot on. It might be worth trying one of these before sending the camera in or prising off the hot-shoe!

It's true several old lenses can make troubles when close focused - or better said, do not couple below 1m at all. But then they do that on any LTM/M body. The R-D1 has a close focus setting. It's a small screw at the left of the RF unit and not accessible through the hotshoe. DAG has realigned mine after the close focus was off about 13cm. Now its spot on, with all lenses. See the thread here.
