We used to use collodion back in the day. Just gently coat lens surface with a fine brush taking care not to disturb the surface of the lens and keep it away from the metal as much as you can. Wait until it dries and peel off the cellulose skin that forms. Optics look absolutely pristine and you never really touch them.
