Fix Kiron 28/f2 lense ?

OOPS !

My Kiron 28 has a deefunct aperture mechanism . Shouda' checked it , but was having deeficulty with how it worked on K 10 .

However at full aperture , it's just what i like , substantial , and it's a dream to use on camera - should I return it ,and get my £30 refund .... or should I ask for it to be fixed [ if London Camera Exchange can do it ? ] and pay a premiun for the repair ?

I would guess that LCE would just want to cut their losses and dump it ... maybe offer £10 on a chance of fixing it ?

Does anyone know if it's actually possible on a lense of that era ?

It should be possible to repair, but it might not be economical vis-a-vis a refund and getting another 28/2.

Are you sure that it's broken? What does the lens do?

Does the lens have an "A" setting for automatic aperture? I hear that the Pentax digital cameras have a funny way of operating with lenses that don't have an "A" setting, where you have to use the camera on "M" and use a button on the back of the camera for metering. There was a discussion of this recently on a German photo forum where a guy thought that his 50/f1.7 was broken because it only worked at f/8, until someone figured out that it was a -M lens, not an -MA with automatic aperture.

Stuck aperture is common on the Kiron 28. To test----Set the aperture to f16, then flick the lever protruding from the rear of the lens. If the blades open and close OK, you are not setting the camera right. If they don't move, you need the lens cleaned.

From PENTAXFORUMS:
1. Mount the lens on the camera-body
2. Select AF/MF button on the camera to MF (MANUAL FOCUS)
3. Set camera ON
4. Select 'Menu' Go to 'Personal Settings'
5. In 'Personal Settings' select the option for Using 'Aperture Ring' then select option 2 followed by the OK button. (you willonly have to do this once)
6. When using the camera with a manual lens it will first ask the focal length (58mm if you use the Vivitar) Select 58 or whatever is closest to 58mm. Press OK button
7. Your cam. is ready to work with the old lens.

I did the following:
- Menu C set to use aperture ring
- Lens in MF
- Menu C -> AE-L Button in M mode -> set to Av

Yes , I forgot , after all these years , to flick the lever - something I would have done buying Rokkors an age ago !

I did work out how to set the lense , but dee 'scovered then , that it only works at full aperture - hence taking some pics , practising focusing , luckily my old Minolta has a ground glass screen , so I am used to no focusing aids - but the M 8 is so much easier in dim light [ except for faces ! ]

It seems to be an excellent lenses , which is why I am considering having it fixed . The seller will take it back , ad will obtain an esimate for cleaning the lense .

[ maybe I don't like the idea of such a fine lense being dumped , 'cos it won't be economical for LCE to fix it . ]

Total cost around £60 ? I can get a Pentax 28 f2 for that ... maybe not ...

The Kiron lenses are notorious for aperture issues. I would return it.

The only off-brand I seem to have no problem buying for pentax cameras are tamron adaptall lens (preferably with the KA adapters if you can find them otherwise the K mounts).
